U.S. women rout Guatemala in Olympic qualifying, 13-0

Abby Wambach scored twice in the first half to move into third on the career goals list for women’s international soccer, and the United States beat Guatemala 13-0 on Sunday at Vancouver, British Columbia, to clinch a berth in the semifinals of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the London Olympics.

A left-foot tap in the 12th minute and a header in the 14th gave Wambach 129 goals, moving her past Germany’s Birgit Prinz (128). She trails Mia Hamm (158) and Kristine Lilly (130).

Sydney Leroux tied a U.S. record with five goals as Wambach’s substitute in the second half.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE: Manchester City scored a dramatic 3-2 victory over third-place Tottenham, leaving Manchester United as its only likely rival for the Premier League title.

Tottenham rallied from 2-0 down to tie the score. But Jermain Defoe missed an injury-time chance for Tottenham, and Mario Balotelli won the game for City, beating U.S. goalkeeper Brad Friedel on a penalty kick after he was fouled by Ledley King.

Defending champion Manchester United remained three points back after a 2-1 win at Arsenal.

U.S. MEN: Ricardo Clark headed Jermaine Jones’ corner kick into the net in the seventh minute of extra time to give the United States a 1-0 win over Venezuela in a friendly Saturday night at Glendale, Ariz.

FIGURE SKATING

U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS: Scarborough High freshman Morgan Sewall was in 11th place after her short program in the novice ladies competition at San Jose, Calif.

Sewall, 14, received a score of 30.38 points after skating to music from the movie “Requiem for a Dream”. Karen Chen of Freemont, Calif., leads with 46.54 points.

The event concludes this afternoon with a free skate program.

GOLF

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Dan Forsman won the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship, closing with a 3-under 69 in windy conditions at Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii, for a two-stroke victory over Jay Don Blake.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Branden Grace of South Africa birdied the first playoff hole to beat his more experienced countrymen, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, in the Volvo Golf Champions at George, South Africa.

The trio finished at 12-under 280.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Michaela Kirchgasser of Austria won a slalom at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, after prerace favorites Marlies Schild and Maria Hoefl-Riesch skied out on the first run.

Kirchgasser finished in 1 minute, 47.25 seconds, more than sixth tenths of a second faster than Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen. Veronika Zuzulova of Slovakia was third, 1.34 seconds off the pace.

Overall World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn finished seventh.

MEN’S WORLD CUP: Cristian Deville of Italy won a slalom race at Kitzbuehel, Austria, and defending overall champion Ivica Kostelic finished third to win the combined event and go to the top of the overall rankings.

Deville finished in an aggregate time of 1 minute, 39.19 seconds to beat Austria’s Mario Matt by 0.72. Kostelic trailed Deville by 0.78.

For the combined event, the slalom results were added to the results of Saturday’s downhill.

SPEEDSKATING

WORLD CUP: Shani Davis won his second gold in as many days, claiming the 1,000-meter men’s race at Kearns, Utah.

The American finished in 1 minute, 7.69 seconds to edge Stefan Groothuis of The Netherlands (1:07.94). Dutch teammate Pekka Koskela took bronze.

Tucker Fredricks of the U.S. took the overall lead in the 500-meter standings after claiming bronze for the second straight day.
