WINDHAM — An Arundel man is proposing to build 37 acres of greenhouse space off Route 302 to grow hydroponic lettuce and tomatoes and raise fish – a business that would employ 170 people and become Windham’s biggest taxpayer.

John der Kinderen, owner of Arundel-based WNWN LLC, presented a sketch plan of the project to the Windham Planning Board on Monday night.

Called Sebago Farms, the company would sell its fish and produce to food distributors throughout the Northeast, der Kinderen said.

He said he hopes to start production by the end of the year and be fully up and running in 2013.

The 73-acre site of the proposed project is in the Quarry Ridge Business Park off Route 302, just north of Windham’s busiest commercial corridor.
