Cape Elizabeth councilors on Monday approved a new three-year lease for the Law Office of Jamie Wagner.
The office, which is located in a farmhouse in front of the Community Services building on Ocean House Road, is run by a town councilor and local attorney, Jamie Wagner, who has a history of making late rental payments to the town.
The council decided at its Aug. 10 meeting to table renewing the lease until the Sept. 14 meeting in order to gather more information about Wagner’s rental history. In August, Town Manager Mike McGovern said Wagner has only made payments on time once or twice in the last two years.
On Monday, the council voted 4-2, with Chairwoman Kathy Ray and member Jessica Sullivan opposed, to renew Wagner’s commercial lease, which includes additional office space. Wagner’s rental payments of $250 a month were up to date as of Aug. 28, according to the town website, where information on town-owned property leases is viewable by the public.
“The amounts that were owed have been paid,” McGovern said Tuesday.
Under the new lease agreement, which would be valid until July 31, 2018, rent would begin at $500 per month.
In August, Wagner, who was elected to the Town Council in 2012 but is not seeking a second term in the November election, admitted he did not have the best track record when it comes to paying bills on time. Wagner said he was planning to set up auto-pay through his bank account to ensure timely payments going forward.
Wagner, on Tuesday, said he’s “happy with the lease,” but that he does not agree with how the council handled the lease renewal.
“I think it makes sense to ask questions before making accusations,” Wagner said.
