The Freeport Historical Society has decided to alter the hours for Pettengill Farm Day on Sunday, Sept. 13, to allow more people to attend a memorial service for Leon Gorman in Westbrook.

Pettengill Farm Day will run from noon-5 p.m., instead of 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

“As a mark of respect following the passing of Leon Gorman, Pettengill Farm Day will have a delayed schedule this year,” James Myall, executive director of the Freeport Historical Society wrote Tuesday in an email to the Tri-Town Weekly. “We’re hoping this will allow those planning to go to the memorial service in Westbrook time to do so, and it reflects our own sorrow at the loss of a pillar of the local community. We’re hoping to incorporate a tribute to Gorman as part of the event.”

Gorman, president of L.L. Bean during its high growth years beginning in 1967, died Thursday, Sept. 3 at 80, in his Yarmouth home. He was the grandson of L.L. Bean founder Leon Leonwood Bean.

The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center, 471 Stroudwater St.

Pettengill Farm Day will feature many family friendly activities at the historic Pettengill Farm, which is located on an estuary of the Harraseeket River, on Pettengill Road.
