Baseball
Coach: Andrew Wood (second year)
Last year’s record: 4-12
Key players: Brendan Tinsman, Tim Brigham, Dylan Roberts, Nate Ingalls, Marshall Peterson
Key games: Kennebunk, Yarmouth, Falmouth
Outlook: The Capers’ lagged on offense last year, scoring two or fewer runs in 12 of their 16 games; improving their contact with the ball will be critical if the team hopes to succeed in 2015. Wood expresses confidence, however: “I don’t think it’ll be an issue for us this year.” The Capers will also need strong senior leadership and a comfortable pitching staff to compete in a tough but balanced Western Maine Conference that “should make for an exciting season for all the teams.”
Coach: Ben Raymond
Last year’s record: 14-0, Class B state champions
Key players: Griffin Thoreck, Ben Shea, Owen Thoreck, Noah Haversat, Noah Wolfinger, Jack Drinan, Ben Ekedahl, Andrew Kelley, Cole Caswell, Connor Thoreck, Riley Pillsbury, Jay Bottomley, Alex Narvaez
Key games: Falmouth, Scarborough, Brunswick, NYA, Yarmouth
Outlook: Expect the Capers to tear up the field again this year. The team returns most of its high-powered offense, including Shea and Griffin Thoreck. “This could be one of the highest-scoring teams we’ve had in a while,” Raymond says. Elsewhere, the Capers may need a bit more time to gel, as they’ve undergone some changes. Haversat, Drinan and Ekedahl have all dropped back from midfield to defense, for example. Still, those boys have adapted well, according to Raymond, and he’s confident they’ll perform admirably. And Narvaez, a stalwart general to rally the troops, remains in goal. “We hope to be in the mix at the end of the season this year, fighting for a state championship,” says Raymond.
Girls Lacrosse
Coach: Alex Spark
Last year’s record: 10-4, fell in State Final to Yarmouth
Key players: Kate Bosworth (sr., Captain); Melissa Rudberg (sr. Captain); Kristen Rudberg (sr., Captain); Rhoen Fiutak (sr., Captain); Emma Landes (sr.)
Key games: Yarmouth, Kennebunk, Waynflete, Falmouth
Outlook: The Lady Capers have lost some of their firepower since last year (including Abby McInerney, whose performance in the 2014 state bout is by now the stuff of legends), but their defense largely returns. Those veterans will gird the team while they rebuild on the attack. “With a lot of talent to work with, I’m excited for a great season!” says Spark.
Outdoor Track
Coaches: Doug Worthley (head, 19th year); Greg Marles (asst., sixth year); Andrew Lupien (asst., third year)
Key athletes: Outlook: Eddie Galvin (sr., jumps); Mitch Morris (sr., two mile); Kyle Kennedy (sr., mile); Harry Queeney (sr., high jump); Nate Weare (sr., discus); Arden Wing (sr., 100); Eva Brydson (sr., 800); Emily Faria (sr., mile); Henry Shroder (jr., sprints); Morgan Carpenter (jr., jumps); Katie Oberholtzer (jr., high jump); Montana Braxton (jr., sprints & jumps); Anni Ball (jr., long jump); Caroline Lengyel (jr.); Haley Fawcett (jr.); Lily Norris (jr.); Jack O’Kelly (so., throws); Mac Huffard (so., distance); Alex Depke (so., distance); Zoeth Chalat (so., jumps); Jade Hunter (so., triple jump); Liv Palma (so.); Erin Thibeault (so.); Emma Shedd (so.); Matt Concannon (fr., sprints); Kiri McClure (fr., sprints); Kristen Penley (fr., high jump)
Key meets: WMCs, Greely/Yarmouth/Falmouth
Outlook: Worthley has high hopes for his squad in 2015. “We’re looking for many to come along quickly and to have a run at the top six in the State Meet,” he says of the Capers boys, while also acknowledging that the team is young. Still, a number of his freshmen barely missed States during the indoor season, and could make the cut this spring. The girls’ side, he says, is a good mix of veterans and rookies, with much potential for success. “Overall, we hope to improve over last year, place many athletes into the State Meet and be in the top 10.”
Softball
Coach: Carl Henrikson
Last year’s record: 18-1, fell in B West Regional final to Wells
Key players: Ashley Tinsman, Tess Haller, Meghan Nicholson, Hannah Saterley
Key games: Greely, Poland, Falmouth, Kennebunk
Outlook: The Lady Capers face a rebuilding season after 2014’s impressive run. “We lost five starters from last year,” says Henrikson, “and have no one that’s thrown a single varsity pitch, but if we make the plays and hit, I’d say we’ll be in the middle of the pack and should make the playoffs.”
Boys Tennis
Coach: Andy Strout
Last year’s record: 14-2, Class B state champions
Key players: Luke Gilman (singles), Ethan Murphy (doubles), Connor Sullivan (doubles)
Key matches: Falmouth, Waynflete
Outlook: The Capers lost four of their top seven to graduation, and so are tasked with rebuilding. Nevertheless, Strout says, “We have a leader in Gilman and some good athletes who should make the doubles teams competitive.”
Girls Tennis
Coach: Sarah Boeckel
Last year’s record: 8-5, lost in semis to Greely
Key players: Liv Clifford, Erin Whitcomb, Hannah Sawyer, Taylor Hansen, Maddie Bowe
Key matches: Falmouth, Greely
Outlook: The Lady Capers are hungry to grow, to improve on 2014, and have the potential to do so. “We have a great group returning,” says Boeckel, noting that the team lost just two of its top seven to graduation in June, “and some incoming freshmen who’ll see some good court time…These girls come to play every day and fight for every match.”
