The Westbrook Blue Blazes scorched the visiting Waynflete Flyers in the pool on Friday. The Westbrook girls won by a bigger margin, 83-59, while the boys held on for a 75-64 victory.

Of course, the primary goal for most swim teams during the regular season is simply qualifying as many kids as possible for as many events as possible at the end-season meets.

“Great swims by all,” said Westbrook head coach Dana Barrows. “I had some really unexpected drops by a few, so I had some new qualifiers – Brande Labbe did a great job – and the addition of a lot of the freshman girls helped for depth.”

Westbrook’s Molly Sweet qualified in the 200-yard and 500-yard Freestyles; Emma Sperry and Madison Damon both qualified in the 200 IM, and Sperry in the 100 Free; Kari Brown qualified in the 50 Free and the 100 Fly; and Camryn LaPierre in the 100 Back.

On the boys’ side, Blue Blazes standout Greg Violette qualified in the 200 and 500 Frees, and Labbe qualified in the 100 Fly.

Also of note: Violette recently broke another Westbrook record, this one in the 100 Fly. Violette set a new Blazes benchmark of 53.56 in the team’s meet at Cape Elizabeth on Dec. 5.

Westbrook’s next meet is at home against South Portland on Friday the 19th.
