Cigarette likely cause
of fatal fire in Bridgton
BRIDGTON – Smoking is the suspected cause of an apartment fire that killed 73-year-old Randall Harmon last Friday night at the Pikes Farms apartment complex.

Firefighters were called to Harmon’s second floor apartment in Bridgton around 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 3, and found Harmon’s body on the floor, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Investigators from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office believe that his clothing caught fire after falling asleep in a chair with a cigarette.

Authorities say that the other seven apartment units in the complex located at 116 High Street were alerted by smoke detectors and were evacuated without injury. Only Harmon’s apartment was damaged in the fire.

Volunteers needed
for Forest Lake survey

GRAY — The Forest Lake Association  is looking for volunteers for its watershed survey on Saturday, April 29. The training and fieldwork together will amount to six to 10 hours.

The survey will be much like the survey completed by the association in 2003, resulting in a report that identifies potential polluted run-offs from a variety of sources.  Once completed, it serves as a guide for conservation projects, a basis for grant requests, and to direct homeowner efforts to mitigate problem areas.

Anyone 12 and up can train as a volunteer on the morning of April 29. After training, small groups will assist with a survey of erosion sites in the watershed area. Bring a bag lunch, water, bug spray, sunscreen and appropriate footwear and clothing for walking around the watershed. The survey will be conducted rain or shine.

For more information or to sign up, go to www.forestlakeme.org and look under the “Quality” menu.

FLA works towards maintaining the quality of life, lake water and community within the four-town watershed areas of Falmouth, Cumberland, Gray, and Windham.
