Feeling under pressure? Or maybe like you need to find somebody to love? The Windham Performing Arts Center will be hosting a good time on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m., when Portland musician Sean Slaughter appears with his band, Master Stroke, and special guests the Windham Chamber Singers in a tribute show featuring the music of Queen.
Queen, with lead singer and frontman Freddie Mercury, was formed in 1970 in London. The band released a total of 18 No. 1 albums and 18 No. 1 singles. Mercury died at the age of 45 in 1991. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
Slaughter, a veteran of the Portland music scene, was a finalist of “The Queen Extravaganza” in 2011, a contest organized by surviving members of Queen to produce a Queen tour band.
The Windham Chamber Singers are a 40-member choir with a two-decade history of performing across the state, New England and internationally. Led by conductor Richard Nickerson, the group has shared the stage with stars including Kenny Rogers, Andy Williams, Josh Groban and Sutton Foster. In April 2016, the group spent five days in New York City with return performances at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Carnegie Hall.
The show, billed as “A Night with the Choir,” will be based on the success of Slaughter’s Queen Tribute Shows at Port City Music Hall. Slaughter and his band are “honored and flattered that we have been invited to perform with (the Chamber Singers),” he said. “Most importantly, we want to rock Windham.”
Nickerson said the choir is “thrilled that we have the opportunity to share the stage with Sean and his band and excited to continue our tradition of bringing the highest quality performers to Windham. This will certainly be the Windham Chamber Singers as you have never heard them before.”
Elisabeth Marshall, professor of voice at the University of Southern Maine, will join Slaughter for “Barcelona,” a duet originally recorded with Mercury and Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballe.
Tickets are $10-$20 and can be purchased by calling 892-1810, ext.2875 ,or online at www.windhamchambersingers.com.
