The Maine Department of Environmental Protection Friday was on the scene in Gorham where a tractor-trailer tanker carrying gasoline and diesel fuel rolled over Thursday at a roundabout, closing two highways for several hours, Gorham Fire Chief Robert Lefebvre said.
The incident occurred at 7:58 p.m. on the roundabout that links South Street (Route 114) with the Bernard P. Rines Pass (Route 112). Lefebvre said about 1,000 gallons of the products were spilled, and he expected the cleanup to take several days.
No one was injured and the two roads re-opened about 4 a.m. Friday. Lefebvre said the tanker was carrying 5,000 gallons of gasoline and 4,500 gallons of diesel fuel. No further details of the accident were available.
Because public water is unavailable in that area, water was trucked to the scene and firefighters sprayed the spilled fuel with foam to prevent it from igniting. Several surrounding departments assisted Gorham including Buxton, Portland, Scarborough, South Portland, Standish, and Westbrook.
A similar rollover happened two years ago at the same site.
