Westbrook students meet Patriots players

Students from Westbrook Middle School had the opportunity to meet New England Patriots players and ESPN reporter Mike Reiss, work with a professional improv group and meet other students from around New England at a recent Fuel Up to Play 60 Leadership Summit at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Students Angelica Johns, who is also this year’s state ambassador for Fuel Up to Play 60, Jaylen White and Jason Shackley, along with their school’s program adviser and physical education teacher, Michele Higgins, and Westbrook High School student Madison Damon, a former state ambassador, attended the event July 21.

Fuel Up to Play 60, the nation’s largest health and wellness program created in partnership with Maine Dairy & Nutrition Council and the NFL, in cooperation with USDA, encourages students to eat healthy, be active and make positive, healthy changes in their schools and communities. Johns and Damon also served as student coaches for the event, organizing and leading other students through the various activities, which included a skills session with former Patriot players and a smoothie recipe contest, which Johns’ group won.

“Fuel Up to Play 60 has provided our school with so many wonderful opportunities to improve our school’s wellness, and the New England Summit has been my favorite perk of all,” said Higgins in a press release. “This was my second New England Summit, and my favorite part was the speech by Duron Harmon.”

Higgins said what stuck with her most was when the New England Patriots safety spoke about fooling around at football practice as a kid and his coach called him out on it. “The coach asked him how expected to do great things when he was acting like that, so Duron turned himself around and starting working hard every day to achieve his dreams,” Higgins said in the press release

She added that she also enjoyed the opportunity to work and collaborate with other program advisers from New England, getting advice and ideas about how to improve the program at Westbrook.

“And seeing our Westbrook kids take part in such a well run program, made me really excited to see how they will step it up when school starts and help Westbrook Middle School improve our healthy eating and physical activity,” she said.

White and Johns then went on to attend the national Fuel Up to Play 60 Student Ambassador Summit on the Purdue University Campus in Indianapolis, Ind., the following week.
