WESTBROOK — Waterfront Concerts has rescheduled a concert after scheduling three Rock Row shows too close together in violation of its agreement with the city.
The Buddy Guy/Kenny Wayne Shepherd show at the Maine Savings Pavilion at Rock Row has been moved back a day to Saturday, June 22.
“We had the ability to flip dates with another venue we have in East Providence, Rhode Island to get into compliance,” said Waterfront Concerts owner Alex Gray. “In the perfect world, we wouldn’t have moved the date, but we want to be a good neighbor in Westbrook and we want this to be successful.”
When the Planning Board approved construction of the amphitheater in December, it gave Waterfront Concerts the go-ahead to stage as many as 16 shows between late May and late September with no more than two shows held “in any 7-day span.”
With the Slightly Stoopid Tour coming to the venue on June 15, followed by Young the Giant and Fitz and the Tantrums June 20 and Buddy Guy originally scheduled for June 21, one of the shows had to be moved.
City Planner Jennie Franceschi said she is comfortable with the concert schedule now.
“At this point we are comfortable with what they have laid out and made sure the personnel in booking knows what the expectation is,” Franceschi said
Gray said there was no malice involved, it was just a matter of a “miscommunication” between the Waterfront team, the developer and the city. Waterfront understood the “7-day span” to mean a calendar week.
“We’re always going to comply with any standard we are held to, and are fortunate to have the support of the city of Westbrook as we build the Maine Savings Pavilion,” said Jon Dow, general manager of Waterfront Concerts.
Gray said Waterfront Concerts saw no issue with the original dates for those concerts, but was tipped off by the city that there was pending violation if nothing changed.
“There was, as sometimes happens, some confusion with the people who booked the shows who didn’t completely get the wording of the conditions and took that to mean something different,” Franceschi said last week.
Franceschi said her office was being proactive rather than reactive in communicating the Waterfront Concerts the difference in interpreting the condition of approval.
“The violation would occur once the show occurs. They have just posted shows so far, so we can’t cite them for any sort of violation,” she said.
Franceschi said had the dates not changed, it could have meant the proposal would have to come back before the board for another review.
Previous Buddy Guy tickets purchased will be honored or patrons can get a refund where they purchased their ticket.
