One-room schoolhouse opens

We go back in time on Saturday, May 14, when a new—old—school will open to the public. Located in historic Windham Center on the grounds of the Historical Society, the Village Green School is a one-room restored building that formerly was a shop. For many months, volunteers from the Society and public have spent hundreds of hours sawing, fitting, measuring, painting and pounding nails to get the Village Green school ready for its first class.

The first day of school begins at 10 a.m. at the Society museum with a brief history of the 19 one-room schools that were located all over the town. Following this presentation, a tour of the Village Green school will be held.

Visitors will have the opportunity to see many items and artifacts the Historical Society has collected over its more than 60 years — old school furniture, including a desk from the Quaker Academy; coat hooks, books (we even have McGuffey’s Readers!) the wood-burning stove and hand-held slates and blackboards.

The public is welcome to this special event, the first step in the development of The Village Green, planned to be a “history park” for the community and visitors to enjoy. In the future, schoolchildren will enjoy special visits and will get to meet the school mistress.

Plenty of parking is available to the left of the Windham Historical Society museum.
