Southern and Central Maine Project Linus is holding a “Make a Blanket Day” on April 30 in Standish at the Kiwanis Club on Route 25. Volunteer blanket makers from all over the region are invited to come and make quilts for Project Linus.

Sue Kirk, project coordinator, said volunteers should bring her sewing machine and blanket making supplies (fabric, batting, thread, rotary cutter, scissors, etc.). Ironing boards, irons and cutting mats will be supplied for volunteer use. Lunch and refreshments will be served and participants can qualify for exciting prizes through a tea cup raffle.

Project Linus is a non-profit, all-volunteer, nationwide program that provides blankets to children in our local area who are in some form of crisis. The southern/central Maine chapter comforted 876 children in 2004 with blankets. The goal this year is 1,000 blankets.

By holding these “Make a Blanket Day” events, Project Linus is able to get people interested and sewing together for the project. The group supports Bridge Crossing Home in Bridgton, Teen Shelters in Lewiston/Auburn and Portland, Camp Sunshine, Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, International Children’s Clinic at MMC, Center for Grieving Children in Portland, Standish EMS, Naples EMS, as well as individuals coping with illness, accident or bereavement.
