Football
Coach: Dave Sterling
Last year’s record: 3-5
Key players: Seniors: Luke Bogdanovich (captain-C/LB), Billy Wahrer (captain – OT/DT), Nick Neugebauer (RB/LB),Pat Damicis (OT/DT); Juniors: Mike Cyr (TE/DE), Zach Bean (QB), Dennis Liu (WR/DB)
Season outlook: The Storm’s record last season represented an improvement over the 2-8 record Scarborough posted in 2007. Sterling said that he expects his defense to be aggressive this season, swarming to tackle opposing ballcarriers.
On the offensive side of the ball, Sterling said he wants to see the Red Storm post an attacking offensive, spreading the field to put points on the board. He said he is looking for big things from the team this season. “We will tackle like thunder and strike with lightning,” he said. “Bring on the Storm!”
Boys soccer
Coach: Mark Diaz
Last year’s record: 18-0, won the Class A state championship
Key players: Nate Tolman, Andrew Nigro, Chase Beech, Trevor Hoxsie and Tennessee Peters
Season outlook: This year’s edition of the Red Storm boys soccer team will bear little resemblance to the team that captured the Gold Ball last fall. Diaz said that the team is only returning two starters from the 2008 championship squad, and their replacements are lacking in varsity experience. “So much of our season will depend on how our young players handle this opportunity,” Diaz said.
Still, the Storm have been focused this preseason and they have taken the attitude that they can make it back to the state finals. “I think this year we are going to look more to our young players to step up, but towards winning another state final, we have that same goal in mind,” said Hoxsie, after a recent practice. “We’re just going to keep working hard again.”
Field hockey
Coach: Kerry Mariello
Last season’s record: 16-2, won Class A West title, lost to Skowhegan in the state championship game.
Key players: Tri-captains: Brittany Ross, Anna Wagner and Heather Carrier. Junior Kristen Felt, a transfer from Cony High School
Season outlook: The ending of the state championship game still leaves a sour taste in the mouths of the Red Storm field hockey team. The Western Maine champs pushed seven-time champion Skowhegan to the limit, but lost in double overtime. Still, the Storm won the program’s first-ever Western regional championship, and the tough loss will serve as motivation all season. “It definitely stays in our memory,” said Wagner after a recent practice. “We think about it every day. It’s just kind of a depressing moment. But, it just makes us want to win that much more this year.”
Mariello said she expects her veteran squad to make a run at a state title again this season. “We’ve got pretty much everyone back from that game,” Mariello said. “We’ve got that bitter taste. We have the drive, the motivation. It’s their senior year and they want to make it a big one. They want it.”
Girls soccer
Coach: Mike Farley
Last season’s record: 8-4-3, lost to Cape Elizabeth in the Class A prelims
Key players: Jenn Colpitts, Lindsay Hagerman, Crysti Tsujiura, Cortney Hughes, Haley Carignan, Jessica Broadhurst, Mimi Abrams, Shelby Carignan, Nicollette Caron, Margaret Palmer and Tori Armishaw
Season outlook: The Storm were ousted from the Class A playoffs in their first game for the second straight season last fall. The No. 5 Storm were stunned by Cape in the prelims and the team needs to shake that loss off if they want to be playing deep in the tournament this season.
Farley said he likes the mix of experience and youth on the Red Storm this season. “We have five seniors that will provide much needed leadership for this year’s team as well as a very strong junior class that has six players that have extensive varsity experience, including both of our goalkeepers,” he said. “The juniors and seniors will lead the way on this team and hopefully draw on their talent and experience to get us through the tough conference games with wins.”
Farley said that while the upperclassmen will be called upon to lead, the team has a good foundation of younger players. “We have six sophomores that will see extensive playing time and will be in pressure situations throughout the year, because of their ability to play at a high level,” he said. “Our sophomores provide us with both toughness and athletic ability that will make it tough for teams to match up against us and compete with the depth of our team.”
“Our hope is to take the season one game at a time,” Farley continued. “We want to strive for a level of consistency that will allow us to play our style of play and impose our will on every team that we play, regardless of what their record is. If we can achieve that level of consistency, I believe we will be a team that has the ability to go deep into the playoffs, and once you get there, anything can happen.”
Golf
Coach: Mike Murphy
Last year’s record: 4-6, missed state tournament
Key golfers: Seniors: Neil Suchecki, Andrew Myers (last year’s No. 1), Dan Murphy and Kevin Fasulo
Season outlook: Murphy said he likes what he has seen from the Red Storm golfers as they get ready for the season. “I just feel like we’re a pretty good team,” he said. “I think we’re pretty consistent golfers for nine holes.”
While last year’s record was disappointing, Murphy said he was encouraged by the team’s performance in some late-season matches. “We came on strong last year, we had some great matches,” he said. “I just saw a lot of confidence and I hope we build on that. I hope what the kids have shown so far in the first two weeks stays to form.”
Boys cross country
Coach: Jim Harmon
Last year’s record: Undefeated in the regular season. The Red Storm fell to Cheverus in the Western regional championships, but made up for it by winning the Class A state meet.
Key runners: Nate Hathaway, Sean Griffin, Zach Brown, Robbie Hall, Nick Morris, Tom Hague, Joe Prosack, Ross Thomas, Conor Sullivan and Wout Moulin
Season outlook: Coming off an undefeated season and a win at the state championship meet, might make some teams overconfident, but Harmon knows the Storm will have to work hard if they want to stay among the top teams, though he added that he expects Scarborough to have another strong season. “Cheverus is the team to beat,” he said. “But I think we have a great chance to surprise everyone.”
Girls cross country
Coach: Ron Kelly
Last year’s record: Won the Class A state championship
Key runners: Seniors: Margaret Benoit, Libby Davis, Melissa Dellatorre, Kelsey Schild, Jenny Snyder and Jessica Solender. Juniors: Abby Chick, Sarah Dugas, Catherine Hall, Emily O’Connor and Emilia Scheemaker
Season outlook: Outdoors or indoors, Scarborough has a tradition of strong track squads, and this edition of the Red Storm girls cross country team should be no exception. Longtime coach Kelly said he feels that the Storm has the potential to be even better than last season’s state champions. “(We have) three or four girls battling for a top five spot on the team,” said Kelly, adding that he felt that Cheverus would pose a threat to the Storm’s state championship hopes.
Besides contending for the team title, Kelly said he felt that the Storm could place some runners high among the final state rankings. “Dellatore, Chick and Dugas all have the potential to be top 15 in the state,” he said.
Volleyball
Coach: Jody King
Last year’s record: 7-7
Key players: Seniors: Caroline Baker, middle hitter; Christina Chase, middle hitter; Abby Lalone, opposite; Paige Conley, defensive specialist; Kathleen O’Donnell, defensive specialist; Christie Edwards, outside hitter; Laura Suarez, setter. Juniors: MacKenzie Bowker, opposite; Bridget Hicks, outside hitter; Christina Bilodeau, outside hitter. Sophomores: Brittany Bona, middle hitter and Emily Robbins, setter
Season outlook: King said she is looking forward to this fall. “We’re very excited about this season and look forward to improving on last year’s record and making the playoffs,” she said. “We have tremendous depth and have improved greatly our hitting.”
