I wanted to write in response to a letter submitted by Mr. and Mrs. Mark Harmon that appeared in the Oct. 11 American Journal. This is an extremely difficult letter for me to sit down and write but I simply have to.
The Harmons letter was written in support of the Democrat mayoral candidate, James Violette. It states that Mr. Violette is a proven, effective leader and committed to the city of Westbrook. While I’m sure that is true, I can tell you that no one is a more proven, better leader or is more committed to our city than our current mayor, Bruce Chuluda.
As many of you may know, Mayor Chuluda lost his best friend and wife of 31 years on April 18 following a two-year battle with lung cancer. During those two years he juggled numerous doctors appointments, treatments, surgeries and hospital stays alongside his wife, all while continuing to lead our city. I know first-hand how many times he had to excuse himself from
his wife’s side to take a phone call, attend a meeting or meet with a citizen. And let’s not forget that as the April 16 Patriot’s Day storm was wreaking havoc throughout Westbrook, Mayor Chuluda spent a great deal of his time at the public safety building making sure that all of the residents of Westbrook were safe and secure. He did this with the full wishes of his
beloved wife during her final days. Vickie Chuluda, his wife and my mother, was his biggest supporter.
Lest the voters of Westbrook think they have a person in Mayor Bruce Chuluda who cares nothing for them or their city, I assure you that is not the case. I’ve heard nothing about anyone wanting a change in City Hall as suggested by those that want to oust him. Mayor Chuluda is responsive and
accessible. He gives his heart and soul to the city and its residents and wants for nothing except to make Westbrook the very best city possible. He is working for the young, our senior citizens and everyone in between, trying to make the best decisions possible to most positively affect the majority. His approach to economic development is cautious and sensible.
Mayor Bruce Chuluda is the “proven, effective leader” that we want directing our city for the next two years. He has proved that he can do it under the most adverse of conditions. On Tuesday Nov. 6, please vote to re-elect Bruce Chuluda, mayor.
