The New Gloucester Parks and Recreation Committee will offer four programs this summer. Two of the programs, gymnastics and cheerleading, are popular hold-overs from past years. Flag football and Soccer Skills and Drills are brand new, an indication of the Committee’s intentions to ramp up the town’s recreational offerings. The Flag football league will be offered in two sessions: Session I, July 12 to August 30 (open to grades K-5) and Session II, September 6 to October 25 (K-3). Coaches from the Patriot Football Booster Club and the Gray-New Gloucester varsity football team will first conduct a training camp to teach the fundamentals and group children by age and ability. Weekly games will follow each Saturday. All practices and games are scheduled for Saturday mornings at the Rowe Station Road fields. The cost is $25 per registrant, per session. The new Soccer Skills & Drills program, will four soccer sessions, has been scheduled for July 22, 24, 29 and 31, from 6-8 p.m. at the New Gloucester Fairgrounds and Rowe Station. Patriot Soccer Club coaches Kim and Nieves Esquivel will conduct nightly foot skills instruction, followed by short-sided games. Children will be divided into appropriate age groups to maximize skill acquisition and fun. Open to kids ages 5-9; $10 per registrant. New Gloucester and Gray children welcome. Back by popular demand, the gymnastics program will be conducted each morning July 14-18 in the Memorial School Gym. The program is divided into novice and intermediate groups, and is open to kids age 4 and up. Cost is $30 per registrant. Led by Coach Becky Norton, the program will include lesssons in proper stretching, strength building, tumbling, beam and vault. New Gloucester and Gray children welcome. Another holdover, cheering camp runs the same days as Gymnastics – July 14-18 – but later in the morning, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Memorial School Gym. The age grouping is slightly different (5-12) and cost is $40 per registrant. Also led by Coach Becky Norton, the program will include work on jumps, tumbling, stunts, dance and motion techniques.
