A 12-year-old boy from Brackett Street was arrested Thursday on charges of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and criminal mischief in connection with a shooting at a school bus earlier in the week.
The boy, whose name is not being released due to his age, was released to his parents and put under house arrest, according to Detective Sgt. Patrick Lally.
Police said another 12-year-old boy, also a Westbrook resident, supplied the pellet gun to the 12-year-old boy, who shot at the school bus at the intersection of Brackett and Prospect streets from a residential building on Sept. 29.
At this point, Lally said, the boy who supplied the gun is not being charged.
Chief Bill Baker said the cooperation of detectives, patrol officers, dispatchers, school officials and the public helped Lally resolve the incident.
According to police, the recovery of the pellet gun on the grounds of the Westbrook Pointe apartment complex on Oct. 1 led to interviews and confessions from the two 12-year-olds.
The original reports of a green sedan with a black male shooter appear to have been unfounded, Baker said. However, he said, police do have evidence from adult witnesses who saw several young adults in a vehicle in the area at the time, wearing hooded sweatshirts and black masks or bandannas.
“The intention of those individuals is certainly suspect, although clearly unrelated to the bus shooting, and remains under active investigation,” Baker said.
Baker said he’d also like to remind parents of the dangers of guns in the hands of children.
He asked parents to be accountable for the whereabouts and security of guns of any kind in their homes.
