Catherine Mae Bolduc, 75

Belonged to Red Hat Club

Catherine Mae Bolduc, 75, died Sept. 1, 2006, at a Portland hospital after a long illness.

She was born on Jan. 7, 1931, in North Conway, N.H. She was a graduate of Kennett High School.

Mrs. Bolduc worked as a waitress at Eastern Slope Inn in North Conway, N.H. It was here that she met her future husband, Philip Joseph Bolduc. After her marriage, she worked as a CNA at Maine Medical Center. After becoming a mother, Mrs. Bolduc devoted her time to her family.

She enjoyed bingo, going on day trips, and baseball games. She was a very active woman. She also liked to lounge by the pool. Mrs. Bolduc was a member of the Red Hat Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, Philip Joseph Bolduc; and her mother, Ora Mae Richardson.

She is survived by her children, Mitch Bolduc of South Portland, Karen Greenlaw and her husband Rick of South Portland, Tracey Nelson and her husband George of Huntersville, N.C., and Ed Bolduc and his fiance Carol Henderson of South Portland; one brother, Ralph Macomber of Port St. Clyde, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Megan Greenlaw, Kyle Greenlaw, Amanda Nelson, and Adam Nelson.

Her funeral was held at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, South Portland, followed by interment in Calvary Cemetery.

Robert Barnes Clarke, 75

Robert Barnes Clarke, 75, formerly of Old Orchard Beach, died unexpectedly on Aug. 31, 2006, at his home in Biddeford.

He was born in Waverly, N.Y., on June 12, 1931, a son of Edwin and Blanche (Crumm) Clarke.

He attended schools in New York, and graduated from Waverly High School in 1949. In 1953, he graduated from Moravian College with a Bachelor’s Degree and received his Master’s Degree from Elmira College in 1959.

He presided over his college fraternity, Omicron Gamma Omega, and was the captain of his college football team. During high school and college, he was very active in school sports.

In 1951, he married Alexandra (Mack) Clarke.

Robert proudly served his country from 1953-1955 in the U.S. Army’s Fighting 69th Div.

From 1955-1966, he owned and operated Clarke Cleaners in Athens, Pa. Afterward; for 25 years, Mr. Clarke taught math and history at the high school level. While a teacher, he was active in coaching football and track.

In 1990, he retired to Old Orchard Beach. Recently, Robert and his wife moved to their new home in Biddeford.

He was a Freemason in Waverly, N.Y. and was active in various teacher organizations. He enjoyed golfing, yard work, and spending time with his beloved family.

He was predeceased by a brother, Edwin Clarke.

Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Alexandra Clarke; four children, Daniel S. Clarke and his wife Barbara of Phoenix, Ariz., Kimberly C. Hodgson of Biddeford, Anne C. Bruton and her husband Thomas of South Portland, and John E. Clarke and his wife Tracy of Pompton Plains, N.J.; and three grandchildren,

Suzanne, John T., and Andrea Andi.

Graveside services will be private amongst Robert’s family at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco.

George D. DiMatteo, 79

Well known contractor, WWII veteran

George Domenic DiMatteo, 79, of South Portland, died unexpectedly Sept. 5, 2006, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Portland on March 20, 1927, the son of Rosario and Josephine Proiette DiMatteo. He attended Portland schools, and was a graduate of Deering High School. George then attended Portland Junior College, and graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston.

For over 40 years, George was the owner of George D. DiMatteo Company, General Contractors, and was responsible for many building projects throughout the state. George enjoyed his work, and continued to work until his very last days.

He was a Past President of the Associated General Contractors, and served on the boards of Northeast Bank, Holy Cross Credit Union, Deering Pavilion, and The Park Danforth. He was also involved with the Boy Scouts of America, served on the Greater Portland Development Commission, and served as an Arbitrator

with the American Arbitration Association.

George served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, having sailed in the Philippines aboard the U.S.S. Casco.

Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Garland DiMatteo; his children, Andrea and Michael; two brothers, John and Bartholomew; two sisters, Angela Wilson and Mary Guy; two grandchildren; Nicholas and Dominique; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Holy Cross Church, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. Conroy-Tully Crawford, South Portland Chapel handled the arrangements.

Donald J. Martin, 63

Pharmaceutical salesman for Upjohn

Donald J. Martin of Scarborough passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on Sept. 2, 2006.

Don was born on July 26, 1943, in Biddeford, to William and Yvonne Roux Martin. He graduated from Thornton Academy in 1961. After high school, Don spent three years in the United States Navy, and then returned to Southern Maine to earn his degree from Nasson College in Springvale in 1968.

Don married Barbara Barrows of Farmington on Sept. 14, 1968, and together they raised two daughters, Michelle and Jill, in Waterville. Don was a fixture in the lives of his daughters and their friends. In addition, Don was an active member of the Waterville community, where he served as a member of the

Waterville School Board and the Waterville Opera House Board. He was an avid supporter of Waterville athletics and extracurriculars, including the swimming, tennis, and basketball teams.

Don spent his entire career with Upjohn, working for 35 years as a pharmaceutical salesman and earning numerous commendations. During that time, he also developed a number of strong relationships with members of his Upjohn family that he and Barbara cherished.

An avid sportsman, Don was a tennis player, hiker, biker, and hunter who never approached anything halfheartedly. That determination extended to golf, which he took up in the last decade and for which he was passionate. His golfing partners ran the gamut of all ages and abilities, and Don never passed up the

opportunity to play with those he loved. A perfectionist, Don recorded the details of each and every round of golf in a log that he used to track his progress.

Over the past six years, much of Don’s life has been dedicated to his four grandchildren, Lilli, Sam, Charlie, and Jake. who adored their Grampa and the frequent visits he paid to their homes or the various excursions he planned with them. Don boasted about his children and grandchildren frequently, the pride evident in his voice and his handsome face. In addition, Don enjoyed traveling with Barbara to numerous places in the United States, as well as vacationing on Clearwater Lake in Farmington, where he relished his role as leader of The Outlaws.

Don was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Waterville and St. Nicholas Episcopal Church of Scarborough, where he recently served as warden. He was also a member of the Scarborough Lion’s Club

A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Don is survived by Barbara Barrows Martin, his wife of 38 years; daughter Michelle Martin Whitney and her husband Christopher Whitney of Cape Elizabeth; daughter Jill Martin Frame and her husband Gregg Frame of South Portland; grandchildren Lillian Frame, Samuel

Whitney, Charles Whitney, and Jake Frame; brothers William Martin of Biddeford, and Raymond Martin of Florida; his aunt, Simone Bergeron of Sanford; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of Don’s life was held at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Scarborough. Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland, was in charge of arrangements.

Sophie Mae McLean, 91

Known for catering weddings

Sophie Mae McLean, 91, of South Portland, died Sept. 5, 2006,at Springbrook Center for Health Care in Westbrook.

She was born in Soldier Pond on Feb. 15, 1915, the daughter of George and Alice Charette Madore, and was educated in the Millinocket school system. She was from a family of 10 children, and had six brothers, Tony, Hempey, Truffley, Peter, Dick, and Gillam; and three sisters, Alice, Cora, and Theresa.

She married Arthur G. McLean Sr. on Sept. 11, 1930.

Mrs. McLean enjoyed traveling with her husband while he served in the U.S. Army, with many happy years at the Panama Canal and at Fort Williams, Cape Elizabeth. A wonderful cook, Mrs. McLean was well known for catering weddings and special events, as well as for her homemade pies and potato salad.

She was also very resourceful with handcrafts, and delighted her children and grandchildren with her homemade gifts. She also enjoyed playing beano with her daughters and her friends.

Mrs. McLean was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church.

She was predeceased by her husband Arthur on Aug. 27, 1982, and tragically by a granddaughter, Pamela, on Sept. 11, 2001.

Survivors include four daughters, Isabelle Shea of South Portland, Dorothy Damush of Murrieta, Calif., Gloria Perry of Westbrook, and Helen Daly of Byron, Ga.; two sons, Arthur McLean of Lisbon Falls, and Robert McLean of Westbrook;

22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral was held at Millinocket Cemetery, Millinocket.

Ellen M. Wood, 79

Accomplished basket maker

Ellen M. Wood, 79, of Falmouth, passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 2, 2006, surrounded by family and friends following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Portland on May 31, 1927, to Evelyn G. and William C. Manning II, Ellen graduated from Deering High School in 1945.

She worked as a secretary at American Can Company for several years. In 1953 Ellen married William D. Wood. They moved to Princess Point in Yarmouth, then in July of 1956, to their current home in Falmouth to raise a family.

Ellen had varied interests. She was accomplished in basketry and won many ribbons for her work. She was an avid New England Patriots fan. The family spent weekends boating and fishing in Casco Bay. Ellen spent her time gardening, cooking, and enjoying her family and friends. Her clambake desserts were legendary.

Ellen is survived by her husband, William D. Wood of Falmouth; her children and their families, Richard E. Wood of Herford, Ariz., Patricia Wood-Bothel of Cape Elizabeth, Robert W. Wood of Durham, and Scott A. Wood of Westbrook; six grandchildren; 2.5 great-grandchildren; and by her brother, William C. Manning

III of Limington.

A celebration of Ellen’s life was held in the Parish Hall at St. Mary the Virgin, Falmouth.
