Who says there’s nothing going on in the winter?

The Windham Hill Club is holding a meeting open to all Windham residents on Tuesday, Jan. 9, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Fellowship Hall of the Windham Hill UCC Church.

At this meeting, a couple of us from the Windham Historical Society will show a video of Old Windham and afterward present a few items from the Society and lead a question-and-answer period about the history of our town. Refreshments will be provided. In case of inclement weather call 892-8156 to see if the program is being presented.

There will be no senior tea at the library in January, but there will be one on Feb. 6 at 1:30 p.m. By happenstance, I attended the senior tea in December and am glad I was there! I can still taste the delicious melt-in-your-mouth confections and thoroughly enjoyed a cup of tea in a teacup with a saucer (not my usual mug with the chip in the top). Best of all, some of my favorite people were there and as a special treat, one of my little grandnieces, Nola, entertained us by unbuttoning her sweater (“I can do it myself. I’m not a baby anymore.”)

The Windham Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday in January, at the Windham Public Library. The program will be the traditional “What is it?” Members and guests are invited to bring items of an historical nature, to be identified by the group. The public is invited to join the society for a fun program and refreshments to follow.

Many years ago I used to regale my mother (and anyone else who would listen) with my plans for celebrating the New Year. There were parties and more parties, new clothes to buy, anticipation of earthshaking events that might happen (but usually did not) and lots of hurrying and scurrying to get hair done, nails done and make-up applied. And it was a lot of fun, but it’s strange how “fun” changes as one gets older. Now, taking a half hour for tea on that December day when I had my list of 10 things to get done while the ground was still bare and I had gas in the car, was just the best day for a long time.

And my January calendar has enough written in to keep me busy and entertained. And before we know it, February will be here; full of holidays and winter clearance sales (always sounds good) and spring will be on our doorstep.

Come to think of it, it doesn’t look like there are going to be enough hours in winter to finish all the tasks in front of me. Unless, of course, we’re snowed in for a few days! Skates, skis and snowshoes never appealed to me. My idea of winter sport is a stack of unread books to choose from and a bowl of chocolates.

See you next week and next year!
