GORHAM – It’s getting to be an annual rite of passage, if there is a big indoor track meet, count on the Scarborough boys and girls to be at the top of the standings.

That tradition was upheld at Saturday’s SMAA indoor track championships held at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham, as the Red Storm boys and girls swept their way to the team titles, making them one of the favorites to capture the state championship later this month.

The Storm boys didn’t take home a lot of individual championships at the meet, but they combined the individual titles that they did win with a number of high finishes to score enough points to hold off a challenge from Gorham High School, winning 156-122. Cheverus was third with 99 points, South Portland and Deering tied for fourth with 83 points and Thornton Academy was sixth with 74.

The Storm girls had a few more individual championships, but they also had to survive a ferocious challenge from a rival in Thornton Academy. The Trojans dominated the junior events at the meet, but Scarborough settled down and held off the Trojans in a close battle, 189.5-157. Deering was a distant third with 89 points, Cheverus was fourth with 79 points and South Portland was fifth with 73.

The Storm and the Riots also took the top two spots in the senior 800-meter run with the Riots’ Darryl Wilkinson edging out Scarborough’s Mike Tudor, 2:03.51-2:05.31.

One of the bigger finishes of the meet came in the 2-mile run where the Storm’s Robert Hall let out a big yell as he crossed the finish line with a winning time of 10:05.26. His teammate, Jack Sullivan was second with a time of 10:09.18 and the Riots’ Maxwell Knutsen was fourth in 10:26.87. The Storm boys also got a win from Alec James in the pole vault as he cleared the bar with a winning height of 11-6.
