STANDISH – The third edition of the Standish Summer Spectacular is shaping up to be quite a shindig, with events ranging from a lakeside music concert to a parade through busy downtown.

The five-member organizing committee, made up of Standish residents Diana Mains Allen, Linda Brooks, Jeanine Dalton, Dee Thibault and Bill Tracy, have been busy the past few months arranging the various events for the June 21-23 festival.

According to Allen, the goal of event is connect community members living in Standish’s three distinct village areas. To that end, events are held in Sebago Lake Village, Steep Falls Village and Standish Corner at routes 25 and 35.

“It’s to bring the community together so that we can see what’s going on in all the villages that make up Standish. So many of us are on a one-track day. We go to work, we come home, we don’t really venture out of our way. So if you live in Sebago Lake Village you don’t get up to Steep Falls Village very often to see what they’re doing up there,” said Allen. “All of our events are held in all three villages so people can see all the good stuff going on in the villages. It is to bring back that sense of community and to highlight the businesses, organizations and volunteers that have made Standish a great place to live.”

The theme this year is “Building Community,” with proceeds from the events going to three organizations that Allen describes as having done a “ton for the town the last few years:” Rippling Waters Organic Farm, Johnson Field Playground Committee and Steep Falls Village Improvement Society.

“Last year, our theme was ‘Paying it Forward.’ So with our themes we’re trying to stay all around focusing on our community and the people in it and what the people are doing to make this a better community. People who pay it forward make this a better community. People who help to build it make this a better community,” Allen said.

One of the folks who has made Standish a better place, Allen said, is Joline Webber, who will be honored as grand marshal of Saturday’s parade along Route 25.

“Joline has lived in Standish for 51 years, has three children with her husband Claude. She has served on the Planning Board, she’s been a trustee at Old Red Church,” Allen said. “She’s a past president of the Standish Historical Society and of the Grandiflora Garden Club and a whole lot more. She was instrumental in moving the World War II memorial from the old town hall to its current location at the municipal building and having it refreshed in the process. Her longstanding history of service to our community in numerous ways makes her a wonderful person to lead this year’s parade.”

Standish resident Alan Hawkes will chauffer Webber at the head of the parade in his late model T-Bird convertible, Allen added.

New on the docket this year is a Taste of Maine event, taking place as part of the three-day event’s kickoff Thursday, June 21, at 7 p.m. at the Standish Boat Launch on Sebago Lake. Allen says the event will feature samples from different restaurants and food producers from throughout Maine. Similar to a brew fest, event-goers can buy tickets and taste as many of the foods as they wish. The event is a fundraiser for the Johnson Field Playground Committee and will feature dancing and live music by the Saco River Jazz Ensemble.

Another new event is a farm tour and contra dance starting at 4 p.m. at Rippling Waters farm, located at 55 River Road in Steep Falls. Similar to square dancing, Allen said, couples or individuals join in groups and dance to a caller while the band, Maggie & Friends, plays. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for youth, under 12 free. Maximum per family is $25. Proceeds go to the nonprofit farm.

Also happening in Steep Falls on Saturday is a Mr. Magic demonstration (2:30-3:30 p.m.) and strawberry pie-baking contest starting at 1 p.m. The proceeds from the two events will go to Steep Falls Village Improvement Society, which is responsible for maintaining the park in Steep Falls Village featuring a recently installed playground with benches, half basketball court, and skate park.

The event, despite near-constant rain last year, is starting to take off, Allen said.

“It’s really starting to take on a life of its own, which is evident in the number of gold business sponsors. Gold sponsors are up to 10 from three last year, who are approaching us rather than us going to them,” Allen said. “I think it’s the energy; it’s good energy. It’s good stuff happening in our town. I think the businesses have realized they want to get involved and be part of this.”

The community park in Steep Falls Village will be a happening place next weekend as the Standish Summer Spectacular takes place. Above, Mr. Magic performs in 2011.
