Lenten programs at Saint Anne’s

Rev. Lawrence J. Conley has announced this year’s Lenten programs at Saint Anne’s Catholic Church, 299 Main St.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1, with the blessing and distribution of ashes at the 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. liturgies. The weekend liturgies will be celebrated at 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sundays. The daily Lenten liturgies will be at 7 p.m. on Mondays with a guest speaker; 8 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays; 9 a.m., Wednesdays; and noon, Thursdays.

On Fridays, the church will be open from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for those wishing to pray the Stations of the Cross.

Conley has also announced a Lenten mission/retreat the week prior to Holy Week. For more information, call the church at 839-4857.

Lenten dinners at Saint Anne’s

The Knights of Columbus at Saint Anne’s Catholic Church, 299 Main St., will host baked haddock dinners from 5 to 6 p.m. on four Fridays, March 3, 10, 24 and 31 at the church.

They will be serving baked haddock and cheese pizza, coffee, juice and milk. $5, $2.50

Ecumenical Commission to meet

The Gorham Ecumenical Commission will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, at Saint Anne’s Catholic Church, 299 Main St.

Benefit reminder

A spaghetti dinner from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 3, at Gorham Middle School on Weeks Road will benefit an eighth grade trip to Washington D.C.

Tickets are $5 or $20 per immediate family; $5 extra for grandparents. For more information, call the school at 222-1220.

USM hosts Gorham Marketplace

The 9th annual Gorham Marketplace will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, at the University of Southern Maine’s Costello Field House in Gorham.

The event, sponsored by the Gorham Business and Civic Exchange, is an opportunity for local businesses to showcase the products and services available in the town of Gorham.

The event will feature over 90 exhibitors. Thirty of the exhibitors are brand new to the show this year. There also will be a demonstration area for local clubs and organizations.

The event is free and all are welcome, including children. There will be a children’s corner featuring a bouncing house, arts and crafts and various games.

This year’s marketplace will also have a food court with local restaurants, an American Red Cross blood drive and cash drawings throughout the day. In addition, the event will include an entertainment stage featuring a range of local performers.

Gorham Greens to meet

The Gorham Green Independent Party will hold a caucus at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, at the Gorham High School Library. All registered Greens are encouraged to attend; other interested Gorham voters should contact David Homa or Joe Cerny before the caucus.

The purpose of the caucus will be to elect officers for the Gorham Green Party Town Committee and to elect delegates to Cumberland County Committee.

Historians to hear Merrifield

Lyle Merrifield of North Gorham will speak when the Gorham Historical Society meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 13, at the Gorham Savings Bank operations center off Gray Road.

Merrifield’s topic is the history of maple sugaring. The public is welcome to attend.

Community Pharmacies offers scholarship

Community Pharmacies, a Maine-based regional pharmacy chain is starting the William G. Waldron Scholarship at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston.

The scholarship will be awarded to a Maine pharmacy student in their sixth year of study with Community Pharmacies paying the final year of tuition for the qualifying student. The current tuition at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy is close to $25,000 per year. This year will be the first year this scholarship will be offered.

Community Pharmacies was founded in 1998 by a team of pharmacists looking to provide Maine with an alternative to out-of-state pharmacy chains. Community Pharmacies stores are in Gorham, Saco, Raymond, Bucksport, Dexter, Corinth, Randolph and Newport. They will be opening two more stores this year in Blue Hill and Cornish.

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Thursday, Feb. 23, that the U.S. public debt was $8,248,764,007,091.15.
