Adopt a Horse
The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals is New England’s largest equine shelter. The nonprofit organization serves abused horses which Maine law enforcement officers have removed from abusive situations. Once the animals arrive at the farm, they receive all necessary veterinary services. Daily care and individualized attention are provided by MSSPA staff and volunteers.
When the animals are fully recovered, they are adopted into or fostered by loving families. Animals which are unsuitable for placement receive sanctuary services. No local, state or federal funding is received by the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals. The organization relies solely on private donations, grants, bequests and fundraising activities to underwrite the costs of operating the farm.
The public can visit the MSSPA’s 279 River Road farm in Windham and meet some of the horses. They are open to the public each day from 1-6 p.m. The website at www.msspa.org (where you will also find an adoption application) will keep you up to date on what’s happening at the MSSPA, or go on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MEHorseRescue, Twitter @MEhorserescue and Instagram at MaineHorseRescue. You can also call 892-3040.
