Pond hockey helps Standish Kiwanis

The Bonny Eagle Ice Skating Association in conjunction with the Standish Kiwanis Club is holding the first annual Southern Maine Pond Hockey Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 26 and Sunday Jan. 27. The purpose of the two-day event is raise money for the organization.

“We try to raise as much money as possible for our programs,” said association president Pat Fecteau. “We want to keep the cost of our programs low so that everyone in the community has a chance to participate.”

The Standish Kiwanis Club is hosting the tournament at Kiwanis Beach, and will also provide a warming hut, and use of the clubhouse for registration. Concessions will be provided by Standish Recreation.

The event is modeled after the World Pond Hockey Tournament held in Canada, and will consist of two days of play, championship bragging rights, and good old fashion fun.

“Of course the tournament is in the spirit of fun,” said Fecteau. “We want the people of the community to come out, watch some hockey, raise money and have a good time.”

The Bonny Eagle Skating Association has multiple programs for kids interested in playing hockey. Their Little Scots beginner program has approximately 70 participants starting at age-3 and aims to teach kids about the game. There are also 43 middle and high school ages kids involved in their more advanced programs. All proceeds raised from the tournament will go back into the program.

There are currently 12 teams signed up for the event, and registration is still open. The cost is $250 per team with a three-game guarantee. For more information or to register, call Pat Fecteau at 642-3764. Or visit www.standish.org/Public_Documents/StandishME_Recreation/SMPH%20Registration.pdf

Word Play

This winter the New Merriam-Webster Dictionary went on sale with a record 100 new words. For some people this means they have more words to add to their vocabulary, to me, this means people all over the world are just making up words. That’s right just making them up.

I am sure several of the words added you have either used or at least heard. For instance, “ginormous” (extremely large), “smackdowns,” (contests in entertainment wrestling) and “DVR” (digital video recorder). But how many of you have heard of “mouse potato” (a frequent computer user), “soul patch” (a small growth of beard under a man’s lower lip), or my personal favorite “big crunch” (a hypothetical cosmological event in which all matter in the universe collapses and which is posited to be a possible fate of the universe).

What?

That’s how it’s going to end for me? The big crunch? I don’t think so. Maybe if I was a grasshopper.

I can’t believe the wordsmiths at Merriam put this in the dictionary. What were they thinking? I say if they can make up words, than so can I. In fact, I challenge all of you to invent a word this week. Use it all the time with your friends and family and see how long it takes to catch on. Maybe you could be the proud inventor of a useless pop culture term. Just make sure it’s not “studiculous” (adj. having the properties of being both stupid and ridiculous), i.e. the people who added big crunch to the dictionary are studiculous. See it’s easy. Now you try it.
