Children who like ice fishing and either missed last week’s derby or want another crack at it can try the third annual Family Ice Fishing Day hosted by the Standish Kiwanis Club this Saturday at Lake Watchic.
Those ready to drop a line will be given food, prizes and the use of fishing equipment from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 1 at the Kiwanis Beach off Route 25 in Standish. The event is free and open to children and their families.
“The youth are the future of our sport, we like to get them involved,” said Eric Guimond of the Standish-based fishing club Yankee Bassers. His group will be there to ferry children from Kiwanis Beach to all the good fishing spots in a snowmobile-pulled sled.
Guimond said his club wanted to do a youth project to get children outside and enjoy the outdoors of Maine. He is friends with former Kiwanis President Scott Callaghan and the Family Ice Fishing Day was a perfect fit.
Callaghan said participants will be taught how to bait a shiner on a hook and set an ice trap and will be fed popcorn, hot dogs and hot chocolate. He said there is no age limits and the event is open to teenagers
“Sometimes they’re a little shy about coming out, but they’re more than welcome,” he said.
