Mums for mom?

The Gray-New Gloucester Optimist Club will be holding its sixth annual Spring Plant Sale at the Key Bank parking lot in Gray Saturday May 10 from 9 a.m.-1 pm. – just in time for Mother’s Day gifts and all your spring planting needs.

They will be selling a variety of gorgeous 12-inch hanging baskets perfect for gift-giving, assorted color geraniums, and a wide selection of annual bedding plants, among other wonderful choices for your gardening pleasure.

A kickin’ camp

Major league soccer camp fliers are available at the Gray Town Office, the Gray Public Library and Newbegin Gym. The camp week is July 21-25 at the Gray-New Gloucester athletic facilities. Ages 5 and 6 attend from 9-10:30 a.m. for $80 per camper, ages 7 to 12 from 9 a.m.-noon for $120 per camper and ages 10 and older that want a more competitive session attend from 5-8 p.m. for $120 per camper.

All fees include a Major League Soccer ball, T-shirt, player evaluation and a complementary Major League Soccer game ticket. Camp organizers are also looking for families who would like to host a coach for the week. Call Dean Bennett at the Gray Recreation Department at 657-2323 for more information. Day camp registration

Now parents can register for fulltime/weekly or daily camps by appointment, please call the recreation office at 657-2323.

Camp runs from June 30-Aug. 22, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Early drop-off is offered at 7 a.m. and late pick-up at 5:30 p.m. for working parents. Camp is based at Newbegin Gym where the gym, recreation room and outside athletic facilities (includes an outdoor basketball court, beach volleyball court, soccer fields and baseball/softball fields) will be used. A large tent is provided with picnic tables for eating lunch.

Each week the campers will be involved in sports, passive recreation, games, special events, swimming, rollerskating, arts & crafts and much more. On Fridays, all-day field trips to destinations like Water Country, Sebago Lake, Funtown and Range Pond are planned.

Children ages 5 to 13 will be supervised by a select group of high school and college counselors (and counselors-in-training) maintaining an 8-to-1 ratio counselor/camper ratio.

Historical society news

The Gray Historical Society is looking for memorabilia of the Gray Grange for an exhibit it is planning this summer. If you have any items from the Grange days of Gray please contact Louise Knapp at 657-4297.

Roxanne Eflin, a leader in historic preservation and downtown revitalization will be the guest speaker at the Gray Historical Society annual meeting. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. followed by a brief business meeting. Eflin’s presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m.

With a presentation of a collection of pictures by Power Point, Elfin will touch on ways to preserve and protect Gray’s irreplaceable heritage. She and her associates at Preservation Planning Associates work to empower communities with appreciation and skills to protect and preserve a historic sense of place.

Many of Gray’s buildings provide tangible links to our past. They must remain as strong and contributing elements of our cultural legacy now and for the future.

The presentation will take place at the Gray Congregational Church Parish house, directly behind McDonalds, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15. For more information call 657-2235 or 657-4297.

A painted garden

The Fiddlehead Center for the Arts garden fundraising sale will be held Monday, May 12-Friday, May 16, from 9 a.m.- 6 p.m.

The public is invited to purchase watering cans decorated by local artists and hand-made garden stakes made by Fiddlehead Center students and friends. Also, preview the landscaping plans and designs on display by local landscape designer Lynn Shafer.

The center is located at 25 Shaker Road in Gray. For more information on the sale and the gardens, call 657-2244.
