WINDHAM – The state medical examiner’s office is still trying to identify a body found severely decomposed last week, though police believe that foul play was not involved.
A couple out for a morning walk Sept. 13 came upon the body in a wooded section off Webb Road. The unidentified couple was walking on ATV trails on Staples Tree Farm’s property when they discovered the body at about 8:30 a.m.
Police are still looking for information from the public to help determine the man’s identity. Lt. David DeGruchy described the man as between 5-foot-7-inches and 6 feet tall, weighing between 200-225 pounds. He had brown-reddish hair and was wearing prescription eyeglasses.
The body was in an “advanced stage of decomposition,” DeGruchy said. He was found wearing blue jeans, a blue Dickies-style jacket, brown shirt and DeWalt work boots. A Boston Red Sox hat was also found near the body.
The couple who discovered the body called Windham police, which contacted state police for assistance. Dolby Funeral Chapel transported the body to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta, where testing is being done to determine the man’s identity.
DeGruchy said the department is conducting its investigation assuming the man’s death was a suicide, since they’ve found no evidence of foul play. The medical examiner’s autopsy will determine the official cause and manner of death, he said.
“We’re just working on who it was and where he was from,” DeGruchy said. “We’re asking around the neighborhood to see if anyone remembers seeing him. We’re also talking to the businesses in the area. So far, we haven’t come up with anything.”
