GORHAM – A 20-year-old Standish man suspected of threatening some Gorham High School students last week remained in jail on Tuesday.
Lt. Chris Sanborn of Gorham Police Department said on Tuesday that Mark Sinclair was arrested on Jan. 30 and charged with Class C felony terrorizing. Sanborn said the threats were “communicated” by voice messages left on individual phones and on Facebook.
Gorham Officer Brent Frank, assisted by Detective Lawrence Fearon, arrested Sinclair at his Standish home. Sinclair on Tuesday was being held in Cumberland County Jail on $10,000 bail.
Sanborn said Gorham High School Resource Officer Wayne Drown learned about the alleged threats and notified Sanborn. Extra police units were dispatched to patrol the exterior of the high school campus to ensure safety.
In the investigation, police interviewed several students at the high school. Police met with school administrators about the matter, but officials decided to not lock down the school.
Security at the school has been an issue in town. Improvements are included in a proposed $14.7 million referendum to finance renovation and expansion of the aging Gorham High School, but a referendum now appears shelved for a year.
Improved security measures proposed would relocate the main office to the school bus drop-off end of the building, add a security vestibule, upgrade door locks, and provide an office for the school resource officer.
James Hager, chairman of the Building Committee, said last month it had recommended the high school project go to voters in November 2014. But, Hager said the latest consensus in a recent School Committee workshop was to send the proposal to Gorham voters in November 2015.
Hager said the building’s mechanical system is near the end of its expected life and a new roof was included in the proposal. Roof repairs at the high school could be handled through the annual school budget.
“Each year in our capital improvements budget we usually include some roof work in the district,” Superintendent Ted Sharp said on Tuesday. “Whether or not we will include any for next year is too early to tell.”
