After 90 minutes of soccer neither Cheverus nor Westbrook was able to score a goal.

“Cheverus may come out here 2-4 but they’re no 2-4 team,” said Westbrook coach Tim Gillis. “They’ve got plenty of talent.”

The game may have been scoreless but it was not without action. Midway through the first half, the Blue Blazes took the ball deep into Stags territory. Goalkeeper Cam Spring came out to play the ball but it got away from him. Out of nowhere a Cheverus defender slid in and prevented a goal.

Amazingly, the same thing happened again late in the half. Westbrook took two shots and were still unable to score.

Both teams had plenty of chances to score in the first half. Westbrook held a slight advantage in shots at the break with seven. Cheverus had five.

“We had a good chance or two in the first half and couldn’t put them home,” said Gillis.

The second half was more of the same. There were plenty of scoring chances for both teams, but nothing going into the net. The Stags fired off 13 shots. Galen Perkins stopped every one of them. Westbrook managed only four shots in the half. Spring turned them all away.

Cheverus had an opportunity late in regulation to score. Tom Moumouras knocked a header past Perkins but off the cross bar. It was the second Cheverus shot to go off the post in the half.

“We knew coming over here if we could score a couple we might be comfortable,” said Gillis. “But if we couldn’t, it was going to be a long day.”

The Blazes were unable to get the comfort they were looking for. They did get some great defensive play from Eben Perkins and Brian Cooke. They held the Cheverus strikers at bay and prevented many shots on goal.

The Stags defense matched Westbrook step for step. Coach Gillis was impressed with the way Cheverus played.

“They over pursue, they really play well and aggressive and strong to the ball,” he said. “We didn’t deal well with that.”

Both teams recorded just a single shot in the overtime periods. The two five minute extra frames passed with no goals. Cam Spring recorded twelve saves. Galen Perkins stopped 18 shots.

Cheverus did something that only one other team has done this season. They prevented the Blazes from scoring.

The tie brings the Stags’ record to 2-4-1. Westbrook is now 4-1-1 and they look forward to Scarborough (5-0-1) Thursday.
