Police are still looking for a Raymond man who eluded them in a canoe Tuesday morning.
Nicholas Mains, 29, of 107 Meadow Road in Raymond fled the vehicle he was a passenger in after encountering a license checkpoint in Raymond at around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, Mains had not been found. He is not considered dangerous.
On Tuesday morning, Cumberland County Deputy Steve Welsh saw the pickup truck Mains was in traveling eastbound on Route 302 near the Main Street intersection where there was a traffic warning signifying a license checkpoint ahead. The operator then made an abrupt turn on to Main Street. Deputy Welsh saw the suspicious maneuver and chased the vehicle along Main Street. As the vehicle came to a stop, the deputy witnessed a passenger exit the vehicle and run into the woods.
Mains, who was later identified by the operator of the truck, was originally wanted on two arrest warrants from York County, failure to appear after bail on two occasions and failure to appear for unauthorized taking and transfer.
Mains was identified by the operator of the vehicle and tracked by a police K-9 unit toward his residence and when Mains arrived in the area of his residence, a deputy who was sitting in his driveway saw him. Mains then ran to a beach adjacent to his residence and used his canoe to flee the area. Mains paddled across Panther Pond and went ashore near the AI Road in Raymond. Another deputy observed Mains come ashore and another foot chase ensued. A second and third police K-9 was called in to do a track, which followed the eastern shoreline of Panther Pond.
The three K-9 units were from the town of Windham, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Maine State Police. The track was called off at about 12:30 p.m.
Chief Deputy Kevin Joyce said he is confident they will find Mains soon.
“We’ve received a lot of tips, and a lot of them are repetitive tips so we know they’re accurate,” said Joyce.
Any others with information on Mains’ location are encouraged to call the sheriff’s department at 774-1444.
The license checkpoint also turned up two arrests. Elden Martin, 40, of Bridgton and Eric Finnen, 35, of Harrison, were both charged with operating after suspension. Six others were warned of motor vehicle violations and there was one summons issued for possession of a usable amount of marijuana.
