The Newhall section of South Windham is one of the oldest parts of town. The second school was built here in the late 1700s to be replaced by a couple of later structures (Today, an apartment building is on the school site). A train depot was located here and a gunpowder manufacturer.
Today, Thayer’s Store is a meeting place for many who enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee and visit with neighbors and friends. Thayer’s is the oldest grocery store in Windham, and was opened in 1918. Originally it was located in the “el” between the today’s store and the house next door. When Charlie Thayer opened his store, they sold an average of 50 tons of grain a week!
Descendants of Charlie Thayer run the store now and although they don’t sell grain, they are famous for their Italian sandwiches and wonderful burgers. (From the archives of Windham Historical Society and Memories of Windham by Kay Soldier)
