Winter may be over (or almost over) but fuel needs are still a concern for many. Windham Helping Windham Neighbors continues to plan fund-raising and welcome donations. The most recent contribution to this valuable resource comes from Kevin and Anne Cornish. Thank you!

Bean Supper

Cornerstone Assembly of God, Cottage Road, will host a bean supper on Saturday, April 19, from 5-6:30 p.m. Adults $6, children 6-12 $3. And under age 6, free. The menu includes two kinds of beans, salads, casseroles, rolls and dessert.

Benefit Concert

On Saturday, April 26, the Music with a Mission group presents a concert featuring the Squid Jiggers at North Windham Union Church. Box office opens at 6:15 p.m. and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and $5 or children under 12. Proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity. Gunpowder Mill Tour

On Saturday, April 26, Windham Historical Society will present a program at 9 a.m. at the Society headquarters, Windham Center Road, about the gunpowder mill at Gambo and its contributions during the Civil War. This will be followed around 1 p.m. with a tour of the site. The public is welcome. Suggested donation for each part of the program is $5. Spring Cleaning

Dozens of people of all ages visit the Windham Clothes Closet each week. The volunteers who operate this resource are asking for some help. The Clothes Closet provides clean clothing of all sizes free of charge to anyone. This is a very valuable service, given the cost today. Items needed include linens (towels, sheets, blankets), men’s jeans, girls’ dresses (sizes 6-14) and socks of all sizes. If you can help, kindly drop off from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday at the Windham Food Pantry, which is located in the Human Services Building, next to the Public Safety Building and across from Friends meetinghouse on Route 202.

Free programs

Lakes Region Senior Center at Sunset Ridge Golf Links, River Road, near the Westbrook line offers the following program at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 21. Helen Harvie of In-Home Senior Services will speak on Bucket Lists; Vickie Lane of Photo Doctor will address how to keep memories alive with photographs and Donna Duffy, an independent legal associate at Legal Shields will speak on inexpensive access to lawyers. This presentation is free and open to the public. A light lunch will be provided by the speakers.

World War II Veterans

World War II Veterans are invited to participate in the town of Windham’s Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 of Windham coordinates the Memorial Day events for the town and is looking for Windham WWII Veterans to come join the festivities. Call Post Adjutant, Dave Tanguay at 892-1306 for more information. If you are not a World War II veteran, you are most welcome to march/walk/ride in the parade. Parade starts at town hall at 8:45 a.m.

American Legion Auxiliary Formed

An organizational meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 148 was held on April 7. Officers elected include Pam Whynot, President; Michelle Libby, Vice President; Aileen Pelletier, Secretary and Barb Voisine, Treasurer. Chaplain is Pat Learned. Regular meetings will be held from 6-7 p.m. on the first Monday of the month at the Windham Veterans Center, unless otherwise notified. The next meeting will be on Monday, May 5, at 6 p.m.

Project Graduation Event

Windham High’s Project Graduation 2014 will be holding a “Dine to Donate” night at Buck’s Naked BBQ in Windham on Monday, April 21, from 4-9 p.m. A percentage of sales between those hours will be donated to Project Graduation.

Alumni Banquet

The Windham High School Alumni Banquet will be held on Saturday, May 17, at the Windham Middle School. Doors open at 4 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Reservation forms will be going out mid-April. Sue Simonson, secretary, appreciates all the alumni members who have provided email addresses – a big money saver. Contact Sue at ssimons1@maine.rr.com. Norma Rogers will chair the raffle table again this year. If you have an item or items to donate, contact her at 892-5608. This year’s class honorees are: 50 Years – the Class of ’64 and 25 Years – the Class of ’89. If you have any “candid” school photos you would like to be included on the PowerPoint presentation, please forward them to Sue along with names and/or event.

Land Trust

Windham Land Trust has regular meetings the first Wednesday of every month at the Windham Public Library starting at 7 p.m. The public is welcome.

Extra Plants?

The Windham Historical Society wants your extra plants. The Society is holding its annual Plant Sale fundraiser on Saturday, May 24, from 8-5 p.m. at the museum headquarters on Windham Center Road. The historical gardeners are seeking donation of extra plants you may have – when you’re cleaning out your flower gardens and hedges, remember to call 892-1433 and leave a message or e-mail info@windhamhistorical.org. Poetry, Prose

The North Gorham Writers’ Group will read their original poetry and prose during their 16th Annual Reading at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, at the United Church of Christ, North Gorham. Participants include Gorham residents Terri Cole, Leanne Cooper, Warren Gilman, Delina Eisenhauer, John Labrecque, Mary Snell, and Linda Strout; plus Skip Brushaber of Westbrook and Chris Small of Freeport and Bob Bean of Standish. Homemade refreshments will be served following the reading. For further information call Mary Snell at 892-9831.

Electronic Recycling

On Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Windham Hill UCC will host an Electronic Recycling Day at Windham Mall. All towns can participate. Items accepted include TVs, computers, monitors, hard drives, laptops, printers, cordless and cell phones, VCR, DVD audio equipment, stereos, speakers. No household appliances. Money donations accepted upon entry to cover cost of organizing the event and to fund support of local church mission needs

May Fair at Church

On Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the May Fair will be held at Windham Hill UCC. Plants, books, baked goods, lunch available. Visit the historic church and take home some bargains.
