An external exam conducted by the State Medical Examiner’s Office earlier this week found that the head injuries that contributed to the death of 39-year-old John Knight during the weekend were consistent with the fall from his second-story balcony, according to Cape Elizabeth police Chief Neil Williams.
“We don’t have anything further that would indicate suspicious activity,” Williams said, Tuesday. The medical examiner’s office, he said, “didn’t find anything inconsistent with a fall.”
Cape Elizabeth police are continuing their investigation of what they have deemed “a tragic accident.” Police continue to track Knight’s whereabouts on Saturday before the incident took place. So far, police have determined that Knight was last seen purchasing groceries at the Cape Elizabeth IGA around 9 a.m., Williams said.
According to his online LinkedIn profile, Knight most recently worked as managing director for Portland-based Knightlabs, a private technology firm that is developing a system for validating online learning credentials. For nearly 17 years, Knight worked as senior staff engineer for Blackboard Inc., an educational technology company with corporate headquarters in Washington, D.C. He and a group of other Cornell University students also helped build CourseInfo, an educational software company and predecessor of Blackboard Inc., into a multimillion-dollar technology company.
The railing of Knight’s back deck at 10 Tiger Lily Lane, located in Cape Elizabeth’s Cross Hill Road development, “appeared to be in old condition” and was broken where Knight had apparently fallen through the railing, said Williams.
Knight, who landed below the deck on some paving stones on his backyard patio, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His immediate family, which includes his wife Erin and two young children, was not home during the incident, police said. On Saturday, after several attempts to contact Knight, a relative became concerned and went to check on him. When the relative arrived to Knight’s home around 4:45 p.m., he discovered Knight’s body on the ground and reported it to police.
Williams said his department has responded to calls involving someone who was injured from falling on the rocks at Fort Williams Park or from a ladder at their home, but he can’t recall any incidents where a resident was injured or died as a result of falling from a deck.
As of the Current’s deadline Tuesday, funeral arrangements had not been made.
The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information regarding Saturday’s incident is being asked to contact police Capt. Brent Sinclair at 767-3323.
