An unidentified man took his life in a parking lot at Gray-New Gloucester High School Saturday afternoon, Sept. 28.
At about 12:50 p.m., the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call reporting a possible suicide at the school campus located off Route 26 in Gray.
Upon arrival of deputies, it was determined that a 19-year-old male had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The individual was then pronounced dead at the scene by deputies, said Capt. Shawn O’Leary.
This individual was not from the Gray-New Gloucester area, and never attended the high school, O’Leary said. However, school officials elected to cancel all school-related activities for the remaining part of the day.
“Gray-New Gloucester school officials should be commended for their quick action and response to this sad and tragic event. Because at the time of this incident several school athletic events were taking place, and no one else was hurt or injured,” O’Leary said.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is still investigating the incident.
