Couple home from wreath mission

Carl and Marcena Phillips were greeted Monday at the Gorham Public Safety Building following their return from Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, where they delivered wreaths from Maine in an Oakhurst Dairy tractor-trailer truck.

A convoy of trucks for Wreaths Across America left Maine last week with the wreaths, which were placed on graves of military veterans. The convoy stopped several times along the way for ceremonies.

“You get choked up,” Carl Phillips said when listening to mothers of American service members who died for their country.

“It touches you,” he said about viewing the graves.

Phillips said the convoy had a police escort all the way from Maine.

“They shut traffic down,” he said.

Guidi receives scholarship

University of Southern Maine economics major Deandra Guidi was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation.

Guidi is a 2006 graduate of Gorham High School and resides in Portland with her husband Garrett King, a 2011 University of Southern Maine graduate.

She is the daughter of Peter Guidi of Fort Myers, Fla., and Dawne DiFrancesco-Guidi of Portland.

The Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation was established in the 1950s as a guarantee fund for student loans. The founders included a wide range of banks, businesses, community organizations and individuals. In 1990, the foundation trustees, to continue the original intent of the founding members, initiated a scholarship program funded by the return on the original loan guarantee funds. The fund is now managed by the Maine Bankers Association, Portland.
