Last year’s record: 7-3, lost in Western Maine semifinals

Key players: Connor Maguire (Sr.-QB/DB), Cam Wilson (Sr.-RB/DB), Jamie Hewes (Sr.-OL/DL), Kyle Snowden (Sr.-OL/DL), Austin Petsinger (Sr.-TE/LB), Caelan Houle (Jr.-OL/DL), Tom Feenstra (Jr.-TE/DL), Christian Lavallee (So.-RB/LB)

Key games: Sept. 7 at York, Sept. 28 vs. Westbrook, Oct. 19 at Mountain Valley

Season outlook: The Capers return only seven starters from last year’s Western Maine semifinalists but are still loaded with plenty of talent at the skill positions. Maguire returns for his second year as the facilitator of the offense while Wilson will get most of the carries out of the backfield. Tight end Feenstra will be the top weapon through the air. The strength of the team could be the fronts on both sides of the ball, led by Snowden, one of the best blockers in the conference. The defense will be led by Lavallee, whose interception set up the Capers’ only touchdown in their opener against Wells last Friday. Cape had a tough start to the season with a 21-7 loss to the defending Class B champ Warriors and will look to rebound this Friday with another tricky game at York. The Capers look a solid bet to make the playoffs for the seventh straight season, but will likely have to spring an upset or two in November to make it back to Fitzpatrick for the first time since 2009.

Coach: Derek Veilleux

Key runners: Peter Doane (Jr.), Trevor Ewald (Jr.). Liam Simpson (Jr.)

Key Meet: Oct. 5 at Greely against Greely, Falmouth, Wells and Yarmouth

Season outlook: Veilleux’s team finished fifth in Class B at the states last year and returns five of its top seven runners, including top-two runners in Doane and Simpson, eighth and 21st, respectively, at the state meet last fall. The squad is led by juniors and sophomores and should only get stronger as the season progresses. The Capers key meet at Greely comes just one week before the Western Maine championships, and if Cape is running well heading into October another top-five finish at states, and perhaps even a title, should be in the cards.

Girls cross country

Coach: Amber Cronin

Key runners: Ellen Best (Sr.) and Emma Inhorn (Sr.)

Key meet: Oct. 5 at Greely against Greely, Falmouth, Wells and Yarmouth

Season outlook: The girls team finished fourth at states a year ago and at the start of the season Cape doesn’t have a clear front-runner, but plenty of depth in the pack. The team’s top two five girls are separated by just a few seconds, which should help the team score points. Senior captains Inhorn and Best should provide strong leadership throughout the season, Cronin said, setting examples for not only how to work hard but how to support the rest of the team, while Rhoen Fiutah and Sam Feenstra are both strong new comers who should help score points. With their consistent squad, another top-five finish at states is a strong possibility.

Key players: Julianne Ayers (Sr.-goalkeeper), Jane Coffrin (Sr.-forward/midfield), Abby McInerney (Jr.-forward), Hannah Newhall (Jr.-forward) Hailey Petsinger (Jr.-midfield), Sam Altznauer (Jr.-midfield), Lauren Steidl (Sr.-forward), Jeannette Lalouche (Sr.-defense), Moriah Brown (Sr.-defense)

Key Games: Sept. 4 vs. York, Sept. 20 at Greely, Oct. 4 at Falmouth

Season outlook: The Capers will look for a more threatening attack this year after failing to score consistently last season, resulting in plenty of 1-0 and 2-0 losses. Steidl led the team in scoring in scoring her sophomore year but missed last season with an ankle injury, and her return should help Cape get on the scoreboard more often this year. Holland’s team does have plenty of experience playing together in both field hockey and lacrosse, and that familiarity should help the Capers improve on last year’s record.

Key players: Reese McFarlane, Jackson Berman, Xander Schonewolf

Key matches: Sept. 4 vs. York and Sept. 13 at York

Season outlook: Desmarais said the team’s goal is capturing its first state title since 2007, and if his group plays up to expectations that isn’t out of the question. Three-time defending state champions York are the main impediments, and two early season meetings with should reveal the Capers chances to knock the Wildcats off their perch.

Last year’s record: 8-5-3, lost in Western Maine quarterfinals

Key players: Maam Fall (Sr.-midfield/forward), Chris Gallant (Sr.-midfield), Alex Bornick (Sr.-forward), Stefan LaRose (Sr.-defense), Cam Caswell (Sr.-defense), Brett Parker (Sr.-goalkeeper), Adam Haversat (Sr.-defense), Omar Khalidi (Jr.-midfield/forward), Eddie Galvin (So.-defense) Cole Caswell (So.-midfield/forward)

Key games: Sept. 21 vs. Greely, Sept. 27 at York, Oct. 9 vs. Falmouth

Season outlook: Cape returns most of the roster from its Western Maine quarterfinalist squad last fall and will look to take the next step this season. This team’s strength will be depth and Raymond will rely on a slew of players to score the goals this season, led by seniors Bornick, Gallant and Fall. The Capers lost a their opener with rivals Falmouth by a close 1-0 score but managed just four shots on net, and developing one or two consistent threats up front will be key against a tough schedule. The defense should be solid with plenty of returnees in front of Parker, who could split time in net with junior Austin Andrews. With a deep roster of players to rely on this is a team that should get better as the season progresses and the playoffs look like a safe bet, but getting far into the postseason against tough Class A competition will be an uphill battle.

Last year’s record: 12-2-2, lost in Western Maine semifinals

Key players: Erin Lyons (Sr.-defense), Maddie Riker (Sr.-midfield), Talley Perkins (Sr.-midfield), Emily Spidle (Sr.-defense), Courtney Guerette (Sr.-midfield), Mary Perkins (Jr.-goalkeeper) Phoebe Shields (Jr.-defense), Lizzie Raftice (Jr.-midfield), Addie Wood (Jr.-forward), Kathryn Clark (So.-forward)

Key games: Sept. 11 at York, Sept. 16 at Yarmouth, Oct. 2 vs. Greely

Season outlook: Cape turned a few heads last year by giving eventual state runners-up and perennial powers Scarborough all they could handle in the Western Maine semifinals, taking the Red Storm to two overtimes before falling 2-1. This year’s squad looks to be just as talented, returning a batch of seniors with plenty of experience led by Riker, a second-year captain and all-conference selection last year who will be the heart of the team in midfield. Up front, the Capers will rely on depth and not any one individual to get the goals, with Tally Perkins, Clark and Woods the main threats. Cape will have a new goalkeeper in Mary Perkins, but she’ll be protected by a solid defensive core in Lyons, Spidle and Shields. Cape was outshot 17-7 in its opening-game 2-1 loss to two-time defending Class B champions Falmouth last Friday and the schedule doesn’t get much easier from here on out. The record may not be as good this year as last, but the team could be better this October heading into the playoffs with a chance to spring a few more surprises against the bigger Class A schools.

Coach: Rob Thompson

Last year’s record: 6-9-0

Key players: Miriea Odlin (Sr.-middle hitter), Natalie Underdown (Sr.-middle hitter), Emma O’Rourke (Jr.-opposite), Sophie Moore (Jr.-setter)

Key games: Aug. 31 at Biddeford, Sept. 21 vs. Scarborough, Oct. 10 at Greely

Season outlook: With six returning seniors and some very strong juniors and sophomores the Capers should have the experience to compete this year. The team has plenty of individual talent: Odlin was ninth in in the state in kills by middle hitters with a 36 percent kill rate last year, while Thompson said Moore is the fastest setter he’s ever coached. The coach listed his team’s goal as simply trying to come together and work efficiently as a team early in the schedule and be as competitive as they can be late in the season.

Senior quarterback Connor Maguire is under center for the Capers this season.
