Welch, Noel, Anania take council seats

2 min read

WINDHAM – Windham voters elected Peter Anania to a one-year term on the Windham Town Council and re-elected Matthew Noel and Dennis Welch to three-year terms.

Anania defeated former Councilor Carol Waig, 3,907 to 3,773. Anania, a South Windham business owner, was appointed to the council in 2010 and will return for another one-year term representing the North District.

“I just want to thank the voters of Windham and pledge to do my best to help Windham navigate in these unchartered waters as the economy comes back and Windham continues to grow,” Anania said.

Waig, who is a frequent speaker at council meetings, lives with Welch and thinks that may have swayed voters to vote for Anania.

“It was a pretty close vote and I know people had issues with Dennis and I being two councilors in the same house,” Waig said. “But I just congratulate the councilors for their win. It’s going to be tough times ahead with the economy the way it is, they have their work cut out for them.”

Noel, who declined to comment, will return to the council for a second three-year term representing the West District. He beat Robert Muir, a former councilor who served from 2003-2009, 4,113 to 3,380.

Muir has lost recent council bids in 2009, 2010 and now 2012. Two of those losses have been to Noel. He’s surprised with the results since Noel supported the sewer proposal, which was soundly defeated by a 3-1 margin.

“The only thing I can think of is that people just did not make the connection with Noel and the sewer. Everybody I talked to, and I went to well over 1,500 doors, was against the sewer. I think I might have found three people on the fence about it,” Muir said.

Welch, who didn’t respond to calls for comment, beat John Carlberg Jr. for the at-large seat. Welch, a prison corrections officer who was elected last year to a one-year term on the council, will serve three years. He defeated Carlberg, a Windham business owner, 3,886 to 3,380.

Carlberg, who ran unsuccessfully as a write-in against Welch last year, was upbeat post-election.

“Congrats to Peter Anania, the perfect fit to fill Councilor [Peter] Busque’s seat. Matt Noel has already proven his dedication to the town of Windham and its future growth, and Dennis Welch, a good man with great ideas and visions for the town as well,” Carlberg said. “I consider this a big win for the town of Windham, we really have a solid, diverse group of leaders up there to keep Windham moving forward. As for me, I will continue to work with these guys from my seat on the Planning Board and my participation with the Land Use Ordinance Committee. Again, nice job everyone and let’s make it happen.”
