News from Royal River Conservation Trust
The recent Sleigh Day in North Yarmouth was successful. The sleigh exhibit at Skyline Farm continues through spring. The skating last week on the Royal River and the Chandler Brook in Yarmouth and North Yarmouth especially was remarkable. Dozens of people reported skating trips as long as 13 miles. Outdoor events are planned on other conserved lands in Gray, Durham, Freeport, Yarmouth, Poland and New Gloucester. These events begin as part of Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, and end with the signature Moonwalk at Pisgah Hill Preserve in March, a full moon just after the vernal equinox.
The group’s photo display from the 2012 photo contest is exhibited at Edna & Lucy’s cafe in Pownal. The display will retire later this month. The 2013 photo contest has begun, with a May 15. deadline. See www.rrct.org/photocontest.html for details.
The organization is working on its next newsletter, with articles emphasizing landscape history in a land conservation context, new federal tax incentives for donations of conservation easements, spring paddling maps and guides of the Royal River, and profiles of local conservation leaders.
A full-moon snowshoe trek is Thursday, Feb. 21, from 6-7 p.m., at Fels-Groves Farm Preserve. Meet at Fels-Groves Farm Preserve parking lot on Gilman Road in Yarmouth. Bring snowshoes or boots with traction, depending on conditions. Join Yarmouth volunteers Ed Ashley and Josh Royte for a one-hour outing exploring the Oak Wood loop just days before the full moon. Fels-Groves was conserved by Maine Coast Heritage Trust, now stewarded by Royal River Conservation Trust, and owned by the town of Yarmouth.
