The Harold Alfond Foundation has donated $100,000 to St. Joseph’s College in honor of the leadership of departing president David House during the campaign to build a new academic building, Harold Alfond Hall, completed in 2004. House, of Cape Elizabeth, left the college in mid-May after 12 years.

In a letter to the outgoing president, Harold Alfond praised House’s contributions and exceptional service to St. Joe’s. Under his presidency, four major buildings were constructed and one major addition/expansion was completed. These include an athletic and recreation center, a cafa and expanded dining hall, a four-story academic building, two suite-style residence halls and new labs, classrooms and office space. During this time, House also oversaw development of two strategic plans and two master plans. In the 12 years of his presidency, enrollment increased by nearly 30 percent.

Harold Alfond, a Maine native and philanthropist who has donated to multiple educational efforts around the state, has been a major donor to the college during its expansion during the last 10 years. Alfond was the lead contributor for both the academic building and recreation center that carry his name.
