Local College Student is Miss Maine 2008

Kaetlin Parent, a sophomore at St. Joseph’s College, was crowned Miss Maine 2008 at competition held Nov. 25 at the Sheraton Tara Hotel in South Portland. A communications major, Parent will go on to compete at the National Miss USA pageant, which will be broadcast on NBC next spring.

Parent, originally from Van Buren, was a former Miss Maine Teen USA in 2005.

Bonny Eagle Varsity Coach and Player Honored

Bonny Eagle High School Varsity Football Coach Kevin Cooper was recently named the Mike Landry Coach of the Year.

Cooper has served as head coach of the Bonny Eagle football program for the past 10 years. Before coming to Bonny Eagle, Cooper was a defensive assistant at the University of Maine, coaching inside linebackers for three years and the defensive line for three years.

Cooper, a Social Studies teacher at Bonny Eagle High School, has also coached at Ohio State University and Maine Maritime after a playing career at Dartmouth College and Lawrence High School. Under Coach Cooper, the football team has won three state championships in the last four years and has gone to the playoffs seven times.

Also honored was Bonny Eagle High School Honor Senior Matt Spearin, who was the recipient of the Gerry Raymond Award. This award is given to the player voted by league coaches to be the best lineman in the Southern Maine Athletic Association.

Bean Supper with a Joint Purpose

The American Legion Post 128 hosted a pot luck supper last week. The purpose of the supper was to begin organizing a Women’s Auxiliary for the town of Standish. Guest speakers at the dinner included Maine State Auxiliary President Kitty Wong, Vice President Bonnie Greenlaw, and Post 128’s mentor and Maine State Legion organizer Robert Morrill.

The American Legion Auxiliary is a civilian organization of women formed to aid The American Legion in carrying out its various programs. The auxiliary’s activities are designed to promote the work of the American Legion and to help the Legion reach its goals.

Membership in the American Legion Auxiliary is limited to the mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters, and grandmothers of members of the American Legion, and to the mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters of all men and women who were in the Armed Forces of the United States.

Deck the Halls with Holiday Spirit

Residents can register their home at town hall immediately and start decorating. Judges will award prizes on Dec. 15 to the person or group who decorates their house or business with the most holiday spirit. Registration started Nov. 26 so hurry and deck the halls! For details, contact the Recreation Department at 642-2875.

The Scene

Steep Falls Public Library is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-noon. Story hour for toddlers and preschool age children is held Wednesday at 10 a.m. Story hour is free and open to the public. Story hour consists of circle time singing, interactive storytelling, craft and a snack.
