A Windham man remains in custody and is facing criminal threatening charges after causing an armed standoff in Augusta last week.
Phillip Urquhart, 42, was driving south on Interstate 95 last Friday with his 18-year-old daughter just before the incident. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said Urquhart was having a number of marital, custody and financial issues and pulled out a handgun in his truck.
McCausland said the daughter demanded to get out of the car and Urquhart pulled over, letting her out on the turnpike in the town of Palmyra. He told the daughter he was going to “scare some people.”
She called 911 on her cell phone to give the state troopers Urquhart’s cell phone number. When a state trooper called Urquhart around 8:30 p.m., Urquhart told him he was just arriving at the Wal-Mart in Augusta.
McCausland said Urquhart had “two handguns, two knives and a lot of ammunition.” After brandishing his weapons, he allowed everyone to leave the store without firing a shot. McCausland said state troopers arrived at the Wal-Mart shortly after Urquhart.
About 50 state, county and local law enforcement officers surrounded the store. After about an hour of negotiation, Urquhart surrendered.
Shortly thereafter Urquhart was confined to the Riverview Psychiatric Center, formerly known as the Augusta Mental Health Institute, for evaluation.
