The landscaping worker who died Tuesday morning in Freeport as a result of an industrial accident has been identified by authorities as Scott W. MacDonald, 59, of Limington.

According to Freeport Fire Chief Darrel Fournier, the accident took place at 136-140 Main St., which is occupied by Olympia Sports, Subway and the Tuscan Bistro. Public safety officials were called at 8:54 a.m. and arrived at 8:58 a.m.

Freeport police officials said Tuesday afternoon that MacDonald was employed by Coastal Landscape Construction & Snow Services based in Cumberland. MacDonald was working with two other people at the time of the accident installing granite steps. MacDonald was assisting the operator of a Bobcat skid steer loader when slabs of granite positioned on the forks of the loader fell and crushed him. Authorities say MacDonald died instantly.

Local and state public safety officials were on scene investigating.
