Rolling thunder killed the boys half of the Southwestern Maine Activities Association Relays at Thornton Academy in Saco on Thursday, Sept. 3, but the girls got their chance to run, and some familiar names topped the list of finishers.

The afternoon was run as a series of seven races, one girl from each school per race. (The boys would’ve run seven races as well.) The course itself was not a full 5K, but roughly half that. Runners took off from the start line of the 100m dash on the TA track, then did a loop and a half before exiting at the long jump gate. They returned soon enough, and finished at the stop line of the 100m dash.

Girls from seven different schools comprised the Top 10; including the No. 11 finisher, Gabbi Pabst of Westbrook, extends that to eight schools. No team clearly dominated, suggesting a degree of parity across a number of the squads.

On the flipside, overall winner Marston was a full 19 seconds ahead of No. 2 Slager – a fairly substantial spread that indicates Marston might be a (very) early favorite to go the distance as an individual.
