State police today released the name of the 5-year-old boy who drowned in Sebago Friday.

Matthew Baker was apparently swimming in Sebago Lake with his foster father, Paul Charette, when he went under the water and disappeared, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Emergency personnel responded at around 4:30 p.m. Friday to a call of a missing child who was last seen in the water near South Beach Street in Sebago. The boy was found floating in the water, and rescuers were unable to revive him.

Though deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office were the primary investigators, they asked for assistance from the state police.

McCausland said evidence indicated the drowning was accidental.
