‘Goodness prevails’

Art’s Variety was robbed at knifepoint on New Year’s Eve by a perpetrator. I am grateful my employees are safe and no one was hurt. The outpouring of support from the Westbrook community has been remarkable.

I commend the Westbrook Police Department members who responded to my call and who have worked tirelessly to find the robber.

I am grateful for the supportive comments, calls and cards from so many friends, customers and vendors. Goodness prevails in the face of bad.

Thank you, Westbrook.

Library Friends appreciate support

The Friends of Walker Memorial Library in Westbrook would like to thank all of the staff, Friends members and members of our library community that have supported our last four fundraisers in the past few months.

We had a Panera fundraiser day at the Panera in the Kohl’s plaza, and we made $35 for the library. Panera donated 10 percent of the sales. It was nice to get something back, and we had about 40 people who participated.

We also had a member of the Friends group and Walker library patron, Kathy Thornton, donate 100 ornaments for us to sell to fundraise with. We sold them last year, and this year we sold them again. It has been wonderful to see how delighted people are with her homemade wreaths, gingerbread, and pinecone ornaments. A big thank you to Kathy for this effort.

We also raffled off two baskets in December, one for children and one for adults. We made $40 on the baskets, and each and every $1 was appreciated. We had two helpers pick the raffle winners this year, Hali Ferrelli and Mohamed Mousa.

The library was very proud to hold the annual holiday open house in the historic 1894 Gathering Room. We have not held a holiday party here for many years, and it was so very wonderful to see at least 80 people gather and celebrate the library in our newly renovated event space. We hope to have many more events in this lovely room.

Thank you to our greater Portland/Westbrook community for supporting our local library in Westbrook. The Friends of the Library appreciatea your support so very much. Deel welcome to join us at our next meeting on Jan. 22, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., and help us plan for our Valentine’s Tea Party, which we will be holding in February. Ask at the Lending Desk at the library, located at 800 Main St., for more information or call 239-7734.

Sincerely,

The Friends of Walker Memorial Library

Westbrook
