Dancing with the Staff

Windham HS Project Graduation 2015 is proud to once again bring you “Dancing with the Staff.” This fun-filled community event features some of your favorite teachers, support staff, and community members dancing to support Project Graduation.

The events will be held on Thursday, March 26, at 7 p.m. and the finale will be on Wednesday, April 15 at 7 p.m. Both performances will be held at the Windham Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available at all RSU 14 schools.

Adults are $10 and students are $5 per show. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door. This event is always a sellout, so plan to purchase your tickets now.

St. Patrick’s Dinner

Windham’s American Legion Post will hold its fifth annual St. Patrick’s Day dinner on Friday, March 20, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Windham Veterans Center, North Windham. Corned beef and cabbage and all the traditional “fixings.” Proceeds will benefit the Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemorative Program to support and recognize Vietnam War veterans. Church Supper

On Saturday, March 21, Windham Hill United Church of Christ will host a community supper from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu includes corned beef and cabbage, carrots, potato, onions and turnip. Beverages, desserts and Irish soda bread round out the meal. $8 for adults, $5 for those 12 and under.

Blue Lights and Funny Cider

On Saturday, March 21, at 9 a.m., retired Maine game warden John Ford and retired state trooper Mark Nickerson will present “Blue Lights and Funny Cider,” a humorous look at their experiences in the woods and on the roads of Maine. Each has written about their law enforcement experiences, and books will be available at this special Windham Historical Society program at the public meeting room of Windham Public Library. Refreshments will be available. A $5 donation is suggested to help further the educational and public programs of the Society. For directions and more information, call Dave at 892-1306.

Veteran Service Officer

Matt Haley, VSO, will not be available at the Windham Veterans Center until April when he will resume office hours on the second and fourth Wednesdays.

Bag Sale

The Thrift Shop at North Windham Union Church is holding its popular “$5 Bag Sale” now through March 21. Shoppers can fill a bag for only $5. Books, housewares, clothing including children’s and baby clothes, toys and much more. Open from 1-3 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

Show Your Number

Help us find you in an emergency. The town of Windham reminds all residential and commercial property owners to make sure that your street number is being displayed in a conspicuous location on the front of your home or business. Numbers should be at least 4 inches in size and of a contrasting color. If your structure is more than 50 feet from the road, numbers should be displayed on a post, fence or mailbox.

There’s a new library in town! This month, Windham Public Library will unveil its new 3M Cloud Library. The Cloud Library is a brand new collection of eBooks and eAudiobooks just for Windham Public Library cardholders. Celebrate the 10th Anniversary Library Tea, Tea Times Ten, on Tuesday, March 17, at 1:30 p.m. for a special celebration and presentation of the new Cloud Library. Thanks from the Veterans

Windham Veterans Association says a big thank-you to last week’s donors for the paving of the road and parking lot at the much-utilized Veterans Center. Truly, Toby’s Dream is coming true. Thanks to Jean and Rodney Pierce, donating in memory of Gene Hawkes, Carol Hooper in memory of Mel D’Arcangelo, Michael and Georganna D’Arcangelo in memory of Mel D’Arcangelo, J. Hill and Mark and Diane Bryant. We’ve reached more than $20,000 in donations. The goal is $50,000. “Little Mermaid Jr.”

Little Mermaid Jr. is being presented by Windham Center Stage Theater. Join us under the sea as Ariel and all her friends sing and dance to such songs as “Part of Your World” and “Kiss the Girl.” Two casts of over 35 children each, have been working hard to bring you a wonderfully entertaining show. Directed by Diane Hancock, with musical direction by Patrick Martin and choreography by Shelbi Wassick. $10, $8 seniors and students. Alumni Banquet

It may be hard to believe right now, but spring will be here before we know it along with the Windham High School Alumni’s 2015 Alumni Banquet. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, May 16, at Windham Middle School, as always the Saturday following Mother’s Day! Doors open at 4 p.m., dinner will be at 6 p.m. Invitations will be emailed or regular mailed in mid-April. Volunteers are needed to bake cupcakes. Shopping Bus

Windham Parks & Recreation has a bus on Wednesday mornings that goes to North Windham for seniors who need to get groceries, go to the bank, get prescriptions filled, or pick up a few things. Please call the office 24 hours ahead of time, at 892-1905 to reserve your seat.

Medicare Help

On Tuesday, March 17, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer Medicare help at the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon. Call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register a seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 207-396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will occur at the same location in April. Fundraisers for Childcare

Windham School Age Child Care Program is holding a RADA Cutlery fundraiser. According to Donna Cobb, this fundraiser has an Internet feature in which you may place orders and they will be delivered directly to you. Go to www.helpourfundraiser.com, ordering number is 505348 and password is wrsacc2015. This is a wonderful way for long-distance friends and relatives to help out this great program. Catalog orders will also be taken at the Windham/Raymond sites from April 1-18. Internet ordering ends on May 31. Call Julia at 807-4221.

As another fundraiser, the program is now selling raffles for the April community calendar. You may purchase the whole calendar for $25 or any days for $1 each. This will be on sale for the month of March. For more information, call Donna Cobb at 892-2002.

Texas Hold ’Em Poker

Like to play poker? At Dena’s Restaurant, Windham Veterans Association hosts Texas Hold ’Em Poker on the first and third Wednesdays each month, starting at 7 p.m. Sign up is at 6:30 p.m. and anyone signed up by 6:45 gets a free $1,000 chip. Proceeds benefit the Veterans Center building and operations. Dena’s Restaurant is next to Windham Post Office – great food and drinks available. Next date is March 18.

Veterans Want You

The traditional avenue to membership in the Windham Veterans Center is by becoming a member of either the American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 or the VFW Post 10643 in Windham. Post members automatically become members of the WVA.

Recently, the WVA changed its charter to become more inclusive. Those individuals – Reservist, veterans or non-veterans – who would like to affiliate with the Windham Veterans Association and become more involved in veterans’ issues, may now do so.
