SCARBOROUGH – Route 1 in Scarborough was closed for about two hours Wednesday after a 52-year-old man fell from the I-295 “Scarborough Spur” overpass onto the pavement, where he was struck by a vehicle.

According to a press release issued by Scarborough Police Sgt. Eugene O’Neill, police “received a report” at 2:17 p.m. of the man “standing on the I-295 overpass.”

It is unclear what the man was doing on the bridge, although he was presumably behaving in a manner sufficient to prompt calls to police. However, Sgt. O’Neill’s press release says, “the subject fell from the overpass,” giving no indication that he may have jumped.

The man reportedly sustained unspecified “serious injuries.” Scarborough Rescue took him to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

“His identity is not being released at this time pending notification of his relatives,” wrote O’Neill, adding, “The incident remains under investigation.”

The identity of the driver who struck the victim also was not release. The vehicle involved was described only as “a car traveling southbound.”

O’Neill was not available for questions, and Scarborough PD declined to provide anybody else for comment.
