The City Council and Mayor Bruce Chuluda voted Monday night to approve two vehicle towing licenses that had been delayed over concerns that the two companies shared the same owner.

Acting as municipal officers, The councilors and Chuluda voted unanimously to approve the towing licenses Maietta Towing and Pleasant Hill Auto Sales, which are both owned by Robert Maietta. In addition to having the same owner, both companies have a listed business address of 154 Pleasant Hill Road in Scarborough.

The licenses had originally come before the Municipal Officers on May 2, but the issue was tabled when Council President Jim Violette raised concerns that the same person owned both companies.

The city administration reviewed the ordinances, and City Administrator Jerre Bryant said they found nothing that prohibits two businesses with common ownership being issued towing licenses in the city.

Bryant said the ordinances did prevent a single business from taking up two spots on the city’s towing rotation list, but since both businesses were separate entities, that did not apply in this case.

In addition, city ordinances also prohibit two towing companies from sharing tow trucks, and Bryant said since each business owned by Maietta had its own equipment, that rule also did not apply.

“The applications from both businesses meet all criteria for a towing license, and we find no reason to deny either of these applications,” Bryant said.
