Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of Durham Pack 145 braved a cold drizzle May 25 to visit Durham’s 23 graveyards and replace last year’s tattered flags with new ones. After replacing more than 200 flags, the scouts returned to the AMVETs lodge for a flag retirement ceremony. When a flag is torn or dirty it is no longer a fitting emblem of the nation. The most dignified way to dispose of such a flag is by burning it. Shown here, the scouts, who built the fire, stand respectfully as the first flag was dedicated to the flames. Then they burned last year’s graveyard flags, as well as some that people in the community had bought in for a dignified disposal.
