Bonny Eagle Middle School athletes took top honors in four weight classes and nine other Scots finished among the top four at Saturday’s Eagle Wrestling Invitational in Windham.

Wescott Junior High School also had a good showing, with three winners at the middle school tournament, which featured 10 teams and 180 wrestlers.

“This is the most important tournament during the year because this is where we get a chance to demonstrate how much we’ve improved during the whole year,” said BEMS coach John Gubelman, “and our goal is to improve each day.”

Scots wrestlers Ryan Cook (80-pound), Stephen Martin (145-pound), Max Alfiero (155-pound) and Joey Layte (165-pound) each finished in first place in their weight class, as did Falcons athletes Preston Peabbles (105-pound), Harrison Strondak (130-pound) and Andrew Drouin (190-pound).

“We’ve got six or seven eighth-graders who’ve really blossomed,” said Wescott coach Frank Cushing. “They’ve all had excellent seasons and should transition nicely into high school.”

After two years as an assistant, Cushing took over the Wescott program this year. Ryan Hutchins, the Scarborough High School varsity coach, has helped out as well.

“(Hutchins) has been great,” Cushing said. “He’s got quite a wrestling background and he’s been an excellent addition.”

The Falcons have home meets remaining against Biddeford and Wells.
